How to use the Resume Tailor agent skill (resume-tailor)

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

Resume Tailor is an agent skill: a set of instructions and reference notes that teaches an AI agent how to tailor one resume to one job posting. It is for job seekers who are applying to a specific role and want to see which requirements they clearly meet and which they don't before they send anything. After this guide you will know how to install the skill, how to ask for it in plain language, what it will and won't do, and how to review its output.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the resume-tailor ZIP from the item page on this directory.
  2. 2Install the skill. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Paste the job posting and your resume. Paste the full job description as text and your resume as text. A link alone may not be readable.
  4. 4Ask in plain language. Say something like tailor my resume to this job, and name a depth if you want one.
  5. 5Review the requirement table. Check which requirements the agent rated as matched and which it flagged as gaps.
  6. 6Answer the gap questions. Reply with confirmed facts in your own words, and give approximations as ranges.
  7. 7Check the tailored copy and decide. Review the headline, summary, bullets and skills against your own record, then decide whether to apply.

What the Resume Tailor skill makes the agent do

The core output is a requirement table. The agent lists the must-have and nice-to-have requirements from the job posting, then maps each one to evidence in your background and rates how strong that evidence is. Requirements with no evidence become gap questions, which the agent asks you rather than filling in for you.

From that table the agent produces a tailored copy of your resume. It changes emphasis, order and wording: a headline, a summary, the order of bullets and skills. It does not change facts. It can also give honest applicant tracking system (ATS) guidance and, if you want, draft a cover letter for that posting.

  • Requirement to evidence table, with must-have and nice-to-have items separated
  • Gap questions for anything you have not yet documented
  • Tailored copy: headline, summary, bullet order and skills
  • Honest ATS guidance on parsing and keywords
  • Optional cover letter for the same posting

Install the Resume Tailor skill

Download the resume-tailor ZIP from the item page. Then choose one of two routes depending on how you use your agent.

For Claude Code, unzip the file into ~/.claude/skills/ to make it available in all your projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project. The skill folder contains SKILL.md and a references folder.

In the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the ZIP there.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: unzip into the project's .claude/skills/
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP
~/.claude/skills/

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Describe what you want in plain language and paste the material. The skill is designed to respond to requests such as the ones below, and to a job ad pasted alongside a resume.

The skill works from pasted text. Paste the full job description and your resume. A link alone may not be readable, so if the agent cannot open the page it will ask you to paste the text.

  • Tailor my resume to this job
  • Customize my CV for this posting
  • Match my resume to this job description
  • What keywords am I missing?
  • Make my resume ATS-friendly for this role
  • Will this get past the ATS?
  • The job asks for X and I don't have it

Choose a depth: Quick, Standard or Deep

The skill names its depth in the first reply and defaults to Standard. Say quick or deep to change it. If you are impatient, you can say so and the agent will return the table and at most five questions in one message.

Quick is for high-volume, lower-priority applications. Standard is for a normal application. Deep is for a top choice, a referral or a senior role.

  • Quick (about 5 minutes): knockout check, top-5 must-have table, headline, first summary line, reorder the top 6 to 8 skills, no bullet rewrites
  • Standard (about 20 minutes, default): full table, positioning line, 3 to 5 gap questions, reorder and rephrase bullets in the two most recent relevant roles, summary rewrite, hide 1 to 3 irrelevant items, skills, and naming the copy
  • Deep (45 to 90 minutes): everything in Standard plus a hidden-requirements read, a company brief if web access is available, a full gap interview, a cover letter and a final review as the hiring manager

Work through the knockouts and the gap questions

Before tailoring, the agent checks likely knockouts: work authorization or sponsorship, location and on-site days, travel, a required licence, a minimum degree, a stated minimum number of years, language fluency, and start date. Tailoring a resume cannot fix a failed knockout, so the agent will tell you plainly if one applies.

Answer the gap questions in your own words. The agent only adds what you confirm. If you have a number, give it; if you only have an approximation, say so, and the agent will keep it marked as approximate. If you have no number, describe scope, frequency, who benefited or a before-and-after.

  • Expect questions in one batch of at most five, knockouts first
  • Answer with facts you can stand behind
  • Give approximations as ranges and they will stay marked
  • Confirmed facts can be added to your master resume at the end, so future sessions do not ask again

Safety notes: scripts, network and your data

According to the item listing, the skill does not run scripts. It does use the network: it may fetch a job posting if you give a link, and in the Deep tier it may search the web for company, team and role information if web access is available.

The skill is set up to keep personal details out of web searches. Searches cover the company, team and role only, never your name or personal details. It also asks before pasting your resume into any third-party tool.

Job postings are treated as untrusted content. If a posting contains instructions aimed at AI tools, the agent will not follow them and will point them out to you.

  • No scripts are run by this skill
  • Network use: fetching a pasted link and optional company research in Deep tier
  • Web searches exclude your name and personal details
  • The agent asks before sending your resume to any third-party tool
  • Instructions aimed at AI inside a job posting are ignored and flagged

Use it with Reactive Resume (optional)

If you use Reactive Resume and have its MCP tools connected, the agent can read and edit your resume records through them. It looks up the application record itself, so you do not need to tell it whether one exists.

Without those tools connected, the skill still works from pasted text and you copy the output into your own document.

  • Optional: Reactive Resume MCP tools connected for reading and editing resumes
  • Without MCP, paste the resume as text

What people use it for

  • Tailoring a resume to one posting before a direct application
  • Checking which must-have requirements you clearly meet before deciding to apply
  • Finding which keywords from the posting are missing from your resume, with context
  • Getting honest ATS guidance on whether a resume's layout and wording will parse cleanly
  • Drafting a cover letter for a specific posting when you want one

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the resume-tailor skill?

Download the resume-tailor ZIP from the item page. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Is the resume-tailor skill free?

The item is listed under the MIT licence. Check the licence file in the repository for the terms that apply to your use.

Does resume-tailor need Reactive Resume?

No. It works from pasted job description and resume text. Reactive Resume MCP tools are optional and only let the agent read and edit resume records you already have there.

Will the skill invent skills or achievements for my resume?

No. The skill refuses to invent facts. When something is missing it asks you questions, and it only adds what you confirm.

Why does the skill need the full job posting and not just a link?

A link alone may not be fetchable, for example if the page is behind a login. Pasting the full text gives the agent what it needs to build the requirement table.

How is this different from a general resume audit or bullet writer?

Resume Tailor works on one specific job posting. Writing bullets with no target job, general resume content advice, application tracking and interview practice are handled by other skills in the same plugin.

Our verdict

Resume Tailor suits job seekers applying to a specific posting who want to see their coverage against the requirements and a tailored copy that does not add invented facts. It is a poor fit if you want bullets written with no target job, help tracking applications, or interview practice, since other skills in the same plugin cover those.
