How to use the Resume Bullet Writer agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Resume Bullet Writer is an agent skill: a set of instructions (a SKILL.md file plus reference notes) that an AI agent such as Claude Code or the Claude apps loads when you ask for help with resume bullets. It turns duties like 'responsible for patient handovers' into specific, truthful achievement bullets. This guide explains what it does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and what to watch for, so you can finish with a stronger experience section you can defend in an interview.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the resume-bullet-writer ZIP from the directory page and unzip it.
  2. 2Place the folder. Move the unzipped skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  4. 4Ask in plain language. Say something like 'rewrite my bullets' or paste a resume line and ask for feedback.
  5. 5Answer the questions. Reply with real facts, numbers or honest ranges. Say 'skip' or 'don't know' when you have no figure.
  6. 6Review the drafts. Check every bullet against what actually happened and keep only the ones you can defend.
  7. 7Apply changes. Paste the bullets into your resume, or if Reactive Resume is connected via MCP, approve the edits made with apply_resume_patch.

What the skill makes the agent do

The skill changes how the agent works on your resume. Instead of polishing wording straight away, it first asks you questions role by role to find the real results behind your duties. It asks for actual numbers or honest ranges, and it is instructed never to invent them. It then writes concise bullets in one of several formats: XYZ, CAR, scope, or qualitative form.

Before writing, it gives each existing bullet a verdict: keep, sharpen, mine (needs questions), or cut. Bullets that are already specific are left alone rather than reworded for the sake of it.

  • Keep: specific bullets with an outcome or scope get lint fixes only.
  • Sharpen: facts are present but wording is weak, so it rewrites without questions.
  • Mine: a duty with no result, so it asks you questions first.
  • Cut: duplicated, very old or off-target bullets.

Install the skill in Claude Code or the Claude apps

The skill is distributed as a ZIP file from the directory page. Download the ZIP and unzip it. For a personal install, put the unzipped skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, put it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.

In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal (all projects): ~/.claude/skills/
  • Single project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Ask in plain language and the agent should load the skill when your request matches its description. The skill lists phrases that usually trigger it, such as 'rewrite my bullets', 'make this bullet stronger', 'quantify my resume', 'my resume sounds boring' and 'I don't have any numbers'.

You can also paste one or more resume lines and ask for feedback. It works well for low-number jobs such as nursing, teaching, care, trades, admin and creative work, where results are often not counted in a dashboard.

  • "Rewrite my bullets for my nursing job. I don't have any numbers."
  • "Make this bullet stronger: Responsible for scheduling shifts."
  • "Improve my experience section. I want to be honest about what I did."

Give it what it needs and expect questions

The skill runs on a SKILL.md-compatible agent such as Claude Code or the Claude apps. It needs no other tools for basic bullet writing. Your reply is the source material: every employer, title, date, tool and number in a final bullet must come from you.

For a broad request such as 'rewrite all my bullets', the agent will offer a choice: a quick pass using only what you have, or a few questions per role for stronger bullets. Either is fine. You can answer 'skip' or 'don't know' at any point.

  • Have your current resume lines and job titles ready.
  • Look up figures only in systems you still legitimately have access to.
  • Expect at most a handful of questions per role, not an interview.

Optional: edit your resume through Reactive Resume

If you use Reactive Resume and have its MCP server connected, the skill can edit experience, project, volunteer and education descriptions directly with apply_resume_patch. It makes changes only after you approve them. Without that connection, it gives you the finished text to paste yourself.

Over MCP, the agent asks whether to edit the resume you have or a copy. This matters if your resume is public.

  • Edits cover experience, project, volunteer and education descriptions.
  • Changes are applied only after your approval.
  • Without the MCP connection, you copy the bullets into your resume yourself.

Safety notes: scripts and network

The skill does not run scripts and does not use the network, according to its listing. The only exception is the optional Reactive Resume MCP connection, which you set up separately.

The skill also asks before pasting your data into any third-party service, and it never includes patient, student or client identifiers in bullets. Confidential figures such as client names or revenue are checked with you before they appear.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no (apart from the optional Reactive Resume MCP connection)
  • Confidential names and figures are checked before use

Tips for better bullets

Bring specifics: named systems, scale, before and after figures, and results with a baseline. Those are what hold up in an interview. Keyword-stuffing is not something the skill will do, and it is not a substitute for matching a real job posting. For that, use resume-tailor.

If the skill declines to add a number you cannot back up, it will offer an honest alternative in the same reply, such as a scope or frequency statement.

  • Say where a figure comes from (a report, dashboard, review or your own count).
  • Use honest ranges or 'about' and accept that the bullet is then labelled as an estimate.
  • Use resume-content-guide for which sections to include and for summaries, resume-tailor for one job posting, interview-prep for interview stories and resume-builder for a resume from scratch.

What people use it for

  • Turning a nursing or care job's duties into scope-based bullets that show patient load and responsibility without identifiers.
  • Rewriting a teacher's or trades worker's experience section with before-and-after or scope wording where no dashboard numbers exist.
  • Triaging a long experience section into keep, sharpen, mine and cut, then asking questions only where results are missing.
  • Editing experience and education descriptions in Reactive Resume after you approve each change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the resume-bullet-writer skill?

Download the ZIP from the directory page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What do I need to use it?

A SKILL.md-compatible agent such as Claude Code or the Claude apps. The Reactive Resume MCP server is optional and only needed for direct edits through apply_resume_patch.

Is the resume bullet writer free?

This page does not state pricing or licence terms beyond the skill's MIT licence, so check the directory listing for details. The skill is listed under the MIT licence.

Will it make up numbers for my resume?

No. The skill is instructed never to invent, round up or adjust a number. If you have no figure, it writes a scope, frequency or before-and-after bullet instead, or uses an honest range labelled as an estimate.

Does it work if I have no numbers at all?

Yes. It is designed for low-number jobs such as nursing, teaching, care, trades, admin and creative work, and it uses non-numeric formats like scope and qualitative wording.

Is it safe to give it my resume?

The skill runs no scripts and uses no network according to its listing. It asks before sending your data to any third-party service and avoids patient, student or client identifiers. Only the optional Reactive Resume MCP connection involves external edits.

How is it different from resume-tailor or resume-content-guide?

The bullet writer focuses on turning duties into truthful achievement bullets. resume-content-guide decides which sections and details belong and handles summaries, resume-tailor fits a resume to one job posting, and resume-builder builds one from scratch.

Our verdict

Use this skill if your resume lists duties rather than results, especially if you work in a job without obvious metrics, or if you use Reactive Resume and want help editing experience sections. Skip it if you want to inflate figures, need help choosing sections or writing a summary, or need interview preparation, since other skills cover those jobs.
