How to use the Report to Google Doc agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The report-to-google-doc skill is a narrow conversion tool for AI agents. You give the agent an existing HTML analytics report, and it produces a Word (DOCX) copy, uploads that file to Google Drive and returns the link. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it and what to check before sharing the result.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the report-to-google-doc skill ZIP from the directory page.
- 2Install the skill. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 3Check requirements. Confirm Python 3, python-docx, beautifulsoup4 and pillow are available, and that a Google Drive connector is available to the agent.
- 4Prepare the HTML report. Have the existing HTML analytics report as a local file with an absolute path, or download the blob-hosted report first.
- 5Ask for the conversion. Request the conversion explicitly, naming the report and asking for a Google Doc, DOCX or shareable document.
- 6Review the output. Check that preflight passed and that the uploaded file matches the source report's headings, tables, charts and links.
- 7Share the link. Open the returned Drive link and confirm sharing settings before sending it to colleagues.
What the skill makes the agent do
The skill is used only when you explicitly ask to turn an existing HTML analytics report into a shareable Google Drive document. The source must be an HTML report: a local file, a downloaded blob-hosted report, or a report produced by the build-report skill's HTML mode.
The agent runs a bundled Python helper that parses the report and builds a DOCX file that keeps headings, tables, charts, links and callouts. It then uploads that DOCX to Google Drive through a Drive connector and checks the uploaded file against the original report before returning the link.
- Input: an existing HTML analytics report (local or blob-hosted)
- Output: a local report.docx, plus a Drive link to the uploaded file
- It does not create new reports from raw data
Install the skill (ZIP download or upload)
Download the skill ZIP from the directory page. For a personal install, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder.
You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
- Project: .claude/skills/ inside your project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP
Check the requirements before you start
The skill needs Python 3 and the python-docx, beautifulsoup4 and pillow packages. cairosvg or headless Playwright are optional renderers. The agent also needs a Google Drive connector available to it (mcp__codex_apps__google_drive).
If dependencies are missing, the source suggests using a local virtual environment with beautifulsoup4, pillow and python-docx installed.
- Python 3
- python-docx, beautifulsoup4, pillow
- Optional: cairosvg or headless Playwright
- Google Drive connector available to the agent
Trigger the skill with a natural request
Ask the agent plainly to convert a named report into a Google Doc, DOCX or shareable document. Include the path to the HTML file or the report location. Because the skill only runs on explicit conversion requests, a general request to build a report will not trigger it.
If you give a remote report, the agent retrieves it first and passes the local HTML file to the helper. If the file turns out to be a sign-in page, a redirect page or a tiny stub, the agent stops and asks for the real report.
- "Convert /Users/me/reports/q3-funnel.html into a Google Doc I can share."
- "Turn this blob-hosted HTML analytics report into a shareable Drive document."
- "Make a DOCX copy of the existing churn report and upload it to Google Drive."
What happens during a conversion
The helper writes its outputs to a folder such as /tmp/report_to_google_doc_plan. The agent checks preflight_checks.json and does not upload until it reports passed with zero errors. The uploaded file is then uploaded with the DOCX MIME type, and the Drive URL is the deliverable.
The source notes that Drive may host the upload as a DOCX-backed viewer file rather than a native Google Docs file. The skill does not force native Google Docs conversion.
- skeleton.txt, manifest.json, preflight_checks.json, report.docx, docx_upload_plan.json, placeholder_queries.json are written as outputs
- Warnings from preflight must be fixed or mentioned in the handoff
- The handoff includes the Drive link and, when useful, the local DOCX or source HTML path
python3 <REPORT_TO_GOOGLE_DOC_SKILL_DIR>/scripts/report_to_google_doc_plan.py /absolute/path/to/report.html --out-dir /tmp/report_to_google_doc_planSafety notes: scripts and network access
This skill runs scripts and uses the network. The helper runs locally, and the upload step sends the DOCX to Google Drive. Before you share, check the report's content and your Drive sharing settings.
The skill is designed not to expose customer-level details or sensitive links that were intentionally omitted from a sanitized report. Reports with sensitive customer data should be reviewed before they are uploaded to Drive.
- Runs bundled Python scripts on your machine
- Uploads the generated DOCX to Google Drive over the network
- Review content and sharing settings before uploading sensitive data
Tips for better results
Use an absolute path to the HTML report. Leave out the optional render worker setting on the normal path, since the source says to pass it only after benchmarking the same report family locally.
Expect charts to be inserted as images, and expect tables to be sized to the page text width. If a chart or table looks wrong, the source says the skill should fix it before upload.
- Use absolute paths
- Keep the source HTML file so you can compare against it
- Ask the agent to report any preflight warnings it could not fix
What people use it for
- Sharing a finished HTML analytics report with colleagues as a Drive file
- Getting a Word-based copy of a local or blob-hosted HTML report without rebuilding it by hand
- Keeping headings, tables, charts, links and callouts in a DOCX version of a report
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the report-to-google-doc skill?
Download the skill ZIP from the directory page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What do I need to run it?
The source lists Python 3, python-docx, beautifulsoup4 and pillow as required, with cairosvg or headless Playwright as optional renderers. The agent also needs a Google Drive connector available to it.
Is the report-to-google-doc skill free?
The skill is listed under the MIT licence. The source does not state any pricing, so check the licence and your own Google Drive and Claude plan terms for costs.
Can it turn raw data into a report?
No. The skill only converts an existing HTML analytics report into a DOCX and uploads it. It is explicitly narrow in scope and does not create new reports from raw data.
Why does the skill upload a DOCX instead of a native Google Doc?
The source says the expected path is HTML to DOCX to Drive upload, and that Drive may host the file as a DOCX-backed viewer rather than a native Google Docs type. The skill does not force native Google Docs conversion.
Is it safe to upload reports with customer data?
Check the report and your Drive sharing settings first. The skill uploads to Google Drive, and the source says sensitive customer data should be reviewed before it is uploaded.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you already have an HTML analytics report and need a shareable Drive copy in Word format with the layout preserved. Pick something else if you need to build a report from raw data or convert other document types, since this skill is deliberately narrow.
