How to use the Remember agent skill: save insights to memory

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The remember skill is an agent skill that saves a decision, fact or lesson to agentmemory's long-term storage, tagged with searchable concepts. It is for developers using agentmemory who want knowledge to survive into future sessions. After this guide you will know how to install the skill, trigger it with everyday phrases like "remember this", and check what was saved.

Quick start

  1. 1Install agentmemory. Set up the agentmemory plugin so the memory_save tool exists, and confirm you have access to its long-term storage backend. Setup details are in the agentmemory repository.
  2. 2Download the ZIP. Download the remember skill ZIP from our page.
  3. 3Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  4. 4Or upload in the Claude apps. Go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
  5. 5State what to keep. Say something like "remember this" followed by the insight, decision or fact.
  6. 6Check the confirmation. Read the echoed concepts and file paths to confirm the retrieval terms are specific enough.

What is an agent skill, and what does remember make the agent do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells an AI agent how to handle a particular kind of request. The agent loads the skill when a request matches its description.

When you say things like "remember this", "save this", "note that" or "don't forget", the remember skill saves that insight to a persistent memory store so it can be found in later sessions. It picks specific, searchable tags (concepts) and any referenced file paths, then confirms what was saved and which tags were used.

Install the remember skill

Download the ZIP from our page and unzip it. The skill folder contains EXAMPLES.md, SKILL.md and TROUBLESHOOTING.md. Place the folder in one of these locations:

You can either unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder to share it with that project.

In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project: .claude/skills/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP

Set up the agentmemory plugin first

The skill calls a tool named memory_save, which is provided by the agentmemory plugin. Without that plugin the tool will not exist, and the skill cannot save anything.

You also need access to the agentmemory long-term storage backend. The source files do not include setup details for this; they are in the agentmemory repository.

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. State the knowledge you want kept and use a phrase such as "remember this", "save this", "note that" or "don't forget". The skill also accepts an argument describing what to remember.

Under the hood the agent calls memory_save with three fields: content, concepts (a comma-separated string) and files (a comma-separated string, empty if none).

  • Remember that we decided to drop Redis and use the iii-engine state store for session caching.
  • Save this: the rate limiter in middleware/limit.ts counts per-IP, not per-user.
  • Don't forget: we rotate JWT refresh tokens on every use.
memory_save { "content": "We rotate JWT refresh tokens on every use; the old token is revoked server-side in auth/refresh.ts.", "concepts": "jwt-refresh-rotation, token-revocation, auth-flow", "files": "src/auth/refresh.ts" }

Read the confirmation and tags

After a save, the agent echoes the concepts it used. The skill's example output looks like this:

Tags matter because a future recall searches on them. The skill prefers specific tags such as jwt-refresh-rotation over generic ones such as auth or notes. If a tag list looks wrong, say so and ask the agent to save a corrected version.

Saved memory abc12345 with 3 concepts: jwt-refresh-rotation, token-revocation, auth-flow.

Update a fact and use multi-agent scopes

To correct a fact, save the corrected version outright. Near-duplicate content supersedes the old record, which leaves recall but stays in the version chain.

In a multi-agent setup, the skill passes agentId so the memory lands in the right agent's scope. To remove a memory saved by mistake, the source points to a separate forget skill.

What people use it for

  • Recording an architecture decision, such as dropping Redis for an in-engine state store, so a later session understands why.
  • Saving a code-specific gotcha, such as a rate limiter that counts per-IP rather than per-user, with the file path attached.
  • Keeping a team's agreed conventions filed under the right agent when several agents share a setup.
  • Capturing a fact that later sessions will need, such as how refresh tokens are revoked.

Frequently asked questions

Is the remember skill free?

The source files do not state pricing or licence terms beyond the listed licence, which is Apache-2.0. The skill itself runs no scripts and uses no network access, but it does require the agentmemory plugin and its storage backend.

What do I need to install the remember skill?

You need the agentmemory plugin providing the memory_save tool, and access to the agentmemory long-term storage backend. Then unzip the skill into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.

Why does the skill say memory_save is not available?

The skill calls memory_save, which the agentmemory plugin provides. If it is missing, the plugin may not be installed or its MCP connection may be stopped. The TROUBLESHOOTING.md file included with the skill walks through checking the host's plugin list and MCP servers, then restarting or reloading the connection.

Does the remember skill run scripts or use the network?

According to the listing, it runs no scripts and uses no network access. It works by calling the memory_save tool from the agentmemory plugin.

How is remember different from recall or forget?

Remember saves memories. The source describes recall as the skill that retrieves what remember saves, and forget as the skill that removes a memory saved by mistake. Lesson handles behavioural rules from corrections, since memories are for facts.

Can I save sensitive information with it?

Not safely. The skill saves whatever content it is given without filtering it in the files shown, and everything saved persists until forgotten. Do not save credentials or personal information.

Our verdict

Use the remember skill if you run agentmemory and want decisions and architecture facts kept across sessions, with a clear record of the tags used. Skip it if you only need temporary notes, if you plan to store credentials or personal data, or if you do not have the agentmemory plugin installed.
