How to use the Patent Specification Writer agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Patent Specification Writer is an agent skill that drafts the full description of a patent application from your claims file and invention disclosure. This guide explains what the skill makes the agent do, how to install it, how to trigger it with plain requests, and what it needs and does not do. After reading, you will be able to set it up and run a first draft that you can then edit and check.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it so the specification-writing folder containing SKILL.md is in place.
  2. 2Choose the install location. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or in .claude/skills/ inside one project. Alternatively, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Prepare the input files. Create patent/CLAIMS.md and patent/INVENTION_DISCLOSURE.md, and add PRIOR_ART_REPORT.md if you have one.
  4. 4Make the request. Ask in plain language, such as 'Write specification for the claims in patent/CLAIMS.md', or use a trigger phrase like 'write specification'.
  5. 5Check the section files. Open patent/specification/ and read each section, starting with SPECIFICATION_INDEX.md.
  6. 6Verify claim support. Review the claim support table and add description wherever a claim element has no paragraph reference.
  7. 7Get professional review. Have a patent professional check the draft against the rules for your jurisdiction before filing.

What an agent skill is and what this one does

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file: written instructions that tell a compatible AI agent how to carry out a task. This skill is the specification-writing skill, named specification-writing, and it sets out a step-by-step workflow for turning existing patent claims into a complete patent description.

The workflow produces a title, technical field, background, summary (technical problem, technical solution and advantages), drawing descriptions, detailed embodiments and an abstract. It also checks that each claim element is supported by the text, and it can ask a separate reviewer model to critique the draft.

  • Reads patent/CLAIMS.md as the primary source, plus patent/INVENTION_DISCLOSURE.md and patent/PRIOR_ART_REPORT.md where available.
  • Writes section files into patent/specification/.
  • Builds a claim support table mapping each claim element to a section, paragraph and reference numeral.
  • Uses a reviewer step for completeness, enablement and consistency checks.

Install the skill (ZIP download or Claude app upload)

Download the ZIP for this skill from this page and unzip it. You have two options depending on how you use Claude.

For Claude Code, place the unzipped skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/ to make it available across your projects, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project.

In the Claude apps, you can upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills instead.

  • Personal (all projects): ~/.claude/skills/
  • Single project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills (upload)

Prepare your input files

The workflow depends on existing inputs. Before you start, put your files in the locations the skill expects. The skill is not designed to write claims or an invention disclosure from nothing.

  • patent/CLAIMS.md: your drafted claims (primary source).
  • patent/INVENTION_DISCLOSURE.md: the breakdown of the invention.
  • patent/PRIOR_ART_REPORT.md: used for the background section, if you have one.
  • Your own figures, in patent/figures/, if you have them. Without figures, the skill describes the figures that should exist based on the claims.

Trigger the skill with a natural request

The skill activates when your request matches its trigger phrases. Its description lists these phrases: "撰写说明书", "write specification", "写说明书", "patent description", and requests to draft the complete patent specification. You can also pass a claims path as an argument, since the skill's argument hint is [claims-path].

Plain requests work. State the goal and point to your files.

  • "Write specification for the claims in patent/CLAIMS.md."
  • "Draft the complete patent description from my claims and invention disclosure."
  • "撰写说明书" (with your claims in the patent/ folder).

Review and finish the draft

Treat the output as a first draft. Open patent/specification/SPECIFICATION_INDEX.md, which lists each section file with its status, then read the claim support table. Any claim element without support should have a description added before you move on.

The skill's instructions state that the review step can call an external reviewer. Its shared references, such as patent-writing-principles.md and jurisdiction format guides, and helper skills like /figure-description and /embodiment-description, are referenced but not included in this download, so the full pipeline may not run as written without them.

  • Check reference numerals match across figures and the text.
  • Check the abstract against the word limit for your jurisdiction.
  • Have a patent professional review the result before any filing.

Safety notes: scripts and network access

This skill is allowed to run shell commands and use the network. Its tool list includes Bash, WebSearch and WebFetch, and it can call external reviewer servers (antigravity, grok, claude-review) and a Codex reviewer route, all listed as optional. The source does not specify what the shell commands run.

Your claims and invention disclosure are sensitive, unpublished material. Before you use the skill on real filings, check which reviewer routes are enabled and what data they send, and review the scripts the agent runs.

  • Shell access (Bash) is allowed by the skill's tool list.
  • Network tools (WebSearch, WebFetch) and optional MCP reviewer servers are listed.
  • The skill ships as written instructions; the shared files and helper skills it references are not included.

What people use it for

  • Turning a finished claims set and invention disclosure into a first full draft for a patent attorney to edit.
  • Checking whether each claim element is described in the specification before filing.
  • Producing a structured starting point for a Chinese (CN) or US/EP specification, with the skill's jurisdiction settings.
  • Drafting the drawings description from figures you already have in patent/figures/.

Frequently asked questions

Is the specification-writing skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence, as stated on this page. The source does not specify pricing for any associated services, and the optional reviewer servers may have their own terms.

What do I need to use this skill?

You need Claude Code or a compatible SKILL.md agent with the listed tools (Bash, Read, Write, Edit, WebSearch, WebFetch). You also need existing claims and an invention disclosure, plus the shared reference files and helper skills the workflow references, which are not included in this download.

Can I use it without claims or an invention disclosure?

The workflow depends on those inputs, so it is not suited to starting from nothing. Write or obtain your claims and invention disclosure first.

Where do I put the skill so Claude Code can find it?

Put it in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or in .claude/skills/ inside a project folder for that project only.

Why does the skill say it needs reviewer servers?

The review step can send the draft to an external reviewer model. Those reviewer servers (antigravity, grok, claude-review) and the Codex reviewer route are optional, but the review step is written around them.

Can I rely on the output for filing?

No. The skill's description states it is not for final filing without attorney review, because drafts can miss legal requirements.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you are a patent drafter, inventor or patent agent who already has claims and an invention disclosure and wants a structured first draft to edit and check. Pick another approach if you have no claims yet, need a ready-to-file specification without professional review, or cannot provide the referenced shared files and helper skills.
