How to use the Local Maps SEO Intelligence agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The seo-maps skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent to audit how a local business appears on map platforms such as Google Maps, Bing Places, Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap. It is aimed at local business owners, agencies and SEO consultants who want map visibility data rather than website analysis. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to phrase requests so it triggers, and what services you need before paying for anything.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the seo-maps ZIP from this page. It contains SKILL.md and LICENSE.txt.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Place the seo-maps folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
  4. 4Decide which tier you can pay for. Free Tier 0 works with public APIs. Tier 1 needs DataForSEO and Tier 2 needs a Google Maps Platform API key.
  5. 5Make a natural request. Name the business, location and the check you want, using a trigger phrase such as geo-grid or GBP audit.
  6. 6Approve the cost estimate. For geo-grid scans, read the displayed grid size, keyword count and estimated cost, then confirm or stop.
  7. 7Review and save the output. Read the score or heatmap and keep the saved JSON file to compare runs later.

What is an agent skill and what does seo-maps make the agent do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that gives a compatible AI agent extra instructions for one task. When the skill is installed, the agent can follow its workflows whenever a request matches the skill's description.

Once seo-maps is installed, the agent can audit a business's map presence, run geo-grid rank scans that check search rankings from many points across an area, score a Google Business Profile, compare reviews across Google, Tripadvisor and Trustpilot, check name/address/phone (NAP) consistency, map nearby competitors, and generate LocalBusiness structured data.

  • Full maps presence audit: /seo maps <url>
  • Geo-grid rank scan: /seo maps grid <keyword> <location>
  • Cross-platform reviews: /seo maps reviews <business> <location>
  • Competitor radius mapping: /seo maps competitors <keyword> <location>
  • NAP verification: /seo maps nap <business-name>
  • LocalBusiness JSON-LD: /seo maps schema <business-name>
  • GBP completeness audit: /seo maps gbp <business> <location>

Install the seo-maps skill from the ZIP

Download the ZIP for the skill from this page. It contains LICENSE.txt and SKILL.md. Unzip it so that the seo-maps folder lands in your skills directory. For a personal install, use ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, use the .claude/skills/ folder inside the project.

If you use the Claude apps instead of Claude Code, you can upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: put the seo-maps folder in ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: put the seo-maps folder in your project's .claude/skills/
  • Claude apps: upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills
~/.claude/skills/seo-maps/SKILL.md

Set up the tier you need before you start

The skill works in tiers and detects which one is available before it runs an analysis. Tier 0 is free and uses public map APIs such as Overpass, Geoapify and Nominatim, which may require accounts or keys. Tier 1 adds live rank tracking, profile audits and review intelligence through the DataForSEO MCP server, which is paid. Tier 2 adds Google Places details and real-time business status through a Google Maps Platform API key, also paid.

The agent tells you the detected tier at the start of an analysis. Tier 1 is detected when the business_data_business_listings_search MCP tool is available. Tier 2 requires Tier 1 plus a Google Maps API key in the environment.

  • Tier 0 (free): Overpass, Geoapify and Nominatim, competitor discovery, static GBP checklist, NAP guidance, schema generation
  • Tier 1 (paid): DataForSEO, geo-grid rank tracking, live GBP audit, review velocity and sentiment
  • Tier 2 (paid): Tier 1 plus Google Places details, real-time status, photo analysis

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not have to type slash commands. The skill's description lists trigger phrases such as "maps", "geo-grid", "rank tracking", "GBP audit", "review velocity", "competitor radius" and "SoLV". Mention one of these, plus the business and location, and the agent should pick the skill up.

You can also invoke the commands directly if you prefer precise control. The argument hint for the skill is [command] [url|keyword|location].

  • "Run a geo-grid rank scan for plumber in Leeds for my client's business."
  • "Audit the Google Business Profile for Joe's Bakery in Austin."
  • "Compare review velocity for this dental clinic across Google and Trustpilot."
  • "Map competitors within the radius of this gym for the keyword personal trainer."
/seo maps grid "personal trainer" "Leeds, UK"

Read the geo-grid cost warning before approving a scan

A geo-grid scan is the most expensive feature. The default grid is 7x7, which is 49 points, and the skill is written to display a cost estimate and ask for confirmation before it calls DataForSEO. Nothing is consumed until you approve.

Each scan saves a JSON file named by business, keyword and date, so you can compare results over time. The file records the solv value and a ranks grid where each cell is the business's rank at that point, or null when it is not in the results.

  • Default grid: 7x7 over a 5km radius (per the workflow)
  • SoLV is calculated as the share of grid points where the business ranks in the top 3
  • Saved file pattern: {business-slug}-maps/geo-grid-{keyword-slug}-{YYYY-MM-DD}.json

Understand what the outputs can and cannot tell you

The skill scores a Google Business Profile by checking 25 fields, with a weight for each field present and optimised. Review intelligence covers velocity over the last six months, rating distribution, owner response rate and some fake-review signals. Fake-review flags require at least two matching patterns.

Treat results as estimates. Geo-grid rankings come from sampled searches, and the skill does not promise any ranking outcome. Website-level on-page analysis is out of scope and belongs to the companion seo-local skill, which the agent will suggest with /seo local <url>.

  • Use the GBP score to find missing fields, not as a ranking guarantee
  • Expect gaps in Tier 0 results, since some fields show as Unknown without DataForSEO
  • Google's terms limit storage of Google data to place_id, and lat/lng caches at 30 days maximum

What people use it for

  • Tracking how a plumber's Google Maps rankings vary across neighbourhoods using a geo-grid heatmap
  • Auditing a client's Google Business Profile field by field and listing gaps to fix
  • Comparing review velocity and owner response rate across Google, Tripadvisor and Trustpilot
  • Mapping competitors within a radius and comparing ratings, review counts and categories
  • Generating LocalBusiness JSON-LD from verified business data

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the seo-maps skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it so the seo-maps folder sits in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Is the seo-maps skill free?

The skill is released under the MIT licence. Its free tier uses public APIs such as Overpass, Geoapify and Nominatim, which may need accounts or keys. Live rank tracking and profile audits need paid DataForSEO access, and Tier 2 needs a Google Maps Platform API key.

What do I need to run seo-maps?

You need Claude Code or another SKILL.md-compatible agent. For Tier 1 features you need the DataForSEO MCP server, which is paid. For Tier 2 you need a Google Maps Platform API key, also paid. The skill uses network access.

Does seo-maps analyse my website's local SEO?

No. It analyses the business on map platforms through APIs. Website on-page local SEO is handled by the companion seo-local skill, and seo-maps suggests /seo local <url> for those checks.

Can I use seo-maps without paying for DataForSEO?

Yes, but with limits. The free tier covers competitor discovery, NAP guidance, schema generation and a static GBP checklist. Some profile fields show as Unknown and live rank tracking is not available without DataForSEO.

Why did the skill ask me to confirm before scanning?

Geo-grid scans call paid DataForSEO endpoints at many points, so the skill displays the grid size, keyword count and estimated cost and waits for your confirmation. Declining means nothing is consumed.

Does the skill guarantee my Google Maps ranking will improve?

No. The outputs are estimates from sampled searches, and the skill does not promise ranking results.

Our verdict

Choose seo-maps if you run or audit local businesses and want structured, repeatable checks of Google Maps visibility, reviews and competitors. Skip it if you cannot pay for DataForSEO or Google API usage, if you only need website on-page analysis (use seo-local instead), or if you expect guaranteed ranking outcomes.
