How to use the Lesson Quiz agent skill (lesson-quiz)

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The lesson-quiz skill is an add-on for Claude that tests you on one lesson of the claude-howto Claude Code tutorial. It asks 10 multiple-choice questions drawn from a pre-written question bank, gives feedback as you go, and then scores you and lists the topics to review. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install lesson-quiz, how to trigger it, and what it needs to run.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the lesson-quiz ZIP from this page and unzip it.
  2. 2Place the folder. Move the lesson-quiz folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Check the prerequisites. Make sure the claude-howto repository is checked out locally and that references/question-bank.md is inside the lesson-quiz folder.
  4. 4Start a quiz. Ask in plain language, for example "quiz me on hooks", or ask for a practice quiz to choose a lesson.
  5. 5Choose your timing. Answer whether you are taking the quiz before, during, or after the lesson.
  6. 6Answer five rounds. Answer two questions per round and read the feedback after each round.
  7. 7Review your results. Read your score, the incorrect answers, and the recommended review sections, then choose a follow-up.

What is an agent skill, and what does lesson-quiz make the agent do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells Claude how to perform a specific task. When a skill is installed and matches your request, Claude follows its instructions.

Once lesson-quiz is installed, Claude can give you a quiz on one lesson of the claude-howto Claude Code tutorial (lessons 01 to 10). It first asks whether you are taking the quiz before, during, or after the lesson. It then presents the questions in rounds of two, shows feedback after each round, scores your answers, and lists the topics you should review.

The questions come from a question bank stored in the skill (references/question-bank.md), not from questions the agent invents on the fly.

  • Asks the timing (before, during, or after the lesson) so results are framed correctly
  • Presents 10 questions in 5 rounds of 2, with answer options shuffled
  • Gives per-question feedback with the correct answer and an explanation
  • Reports a score out of 10 with a grade label and a list of incorrect answers to review

How do you install the lesson-quiz skill?

Download the lesson-quiz ZIP from this page and unzip it. Then place the folder in one of the following locations, depending on whether you want it available everywhere or only in one project.

For a personal install across all projects, put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, put it in the project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal (all projects): ~/.claude/skills/lesson-quiz/
  • Project only: .claude/skills/lesson-quiz/ inside your project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP
~/.claude/skills/lesson-quiz/

What do you need before the quiz will work?

The skill reads lesson content from the tutorial itself, so you need the claude-howto repository checked out locally. The lesson directories (01-slash-commands through 10-cli) and their README.md files must be readable. The skill also needs references/question-bank.md to be present inside the skill folder, since that file holds every question.

Before starting, the skill checks that the chosen lesson's README.md exists. If it is missing, the skill will warn you rather than invent questions, and you should check the repository structure.

  • The claude-howto tutorial repository checked out locally
  • Lesson README.md files readable
  • references/question-bank.md present in the lesson-quiz folder

How do you trigger the quiz with natural requests?

You do not need special syntax. Ask in plain language and name the lesson or topic. If you do not name a lesson, the skill shows a selection prompt listing lessons 01 to 10.

The skill's own examples include the following requests, which map to specific lessons.

  • "quiz me on hooks" runs a quiz on Lesson 06: Hooks
  • "lesson quiz 03" tests you on Lesson 03: Skills
  • "do I understand MCP" assesses Lesson 05: MCP
  • "practice quiz" lets you pick a lesson, then quizzes you

What does a quiz session look like?

After you pick a lesson and a timing, the quiz runs in five rounds. Each round shows two questions. You answer, get feedback on each, and then move on to the next round.

When all five rounds are done, the skill produces a Lesson Quiz Results report. It contains your score with a grade label, a table of all 10 questions with the result for each, a review block for every miss, and a timing-specific message. It then offers to retake the quiz, quiz another lesson, explain a missed topic, or end the session.

  • Grades: 9-10 Mastered, 7-8 Proficient, 5-6 Developing, 3-4 Beginning, 0-2 Not yet
  • Explain a missed topic: ask for the question number and the skill reads the relevant part of the lesson README

What about safety: scripts and network access?

Lesson-quiz does not run scripts and does not use the network, according to its listing. It works from the lesson README files and the bundled question bank on your machine.

The skill can only quiz on the bundled lessons and question bank. If a lesson lacks questions in the bank, the skill is designed to say so rather than make them up.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • Licence: MIT

Tips for getting the most from the quiz

Take it at more than one point. A pre-test before reading the lesson shows what you already know, and an after-test shows what stuck. Choose the timing honestly, because it changes how the results are framed.

Use the review list. After a result, ask to explain the questions you missed, then retake the quiz on the same lesson. The skill offers this option at the end of each run.

  • Use the pre-test to find out what you already know before reading
  • Use the progress check partway through a lesson
  • Re-read the listed review sections before retaking

What people use it for

  • Checking what you already know before reading a lesson on hooks or MCP
  • Running a progress check halfway through the skills lesson
  • Confirming retention after finishing the memory lesson
  • Giving a study group a quick self-test on a single lesson
  • Reviewing specific missed questions with the explain option

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the lesson-quiz agent skill?

Download the lesson-quiz ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What does lesson-quiz require to run?

It needs the claude-howto tutorial repository checked out locally so the lesson README files are readable. It also needs references/question-bank.md inside the skill folder, since that file holds the questions.

Is lesson-quiz free to use?

The skill is listed under the MIT licence. The source does not mention pricing beyond that, so check the repository for licence terms.

Can lesson-quiz quiz me on topics outside the Claude Code tutorial?

No. It only covers lessons 01 to 10 of the claude-howto tutorial and the questions in its bundled bank. It is not designed for other topics.

Does lesson-quiz teach a topic from scratch?

No. It tests understanding rather than teaching. Its explanations are brief, so read the lesson first if you are new to the topic.

Why does the quiz fail or say a lesson is missing?

The skill checks that the chosen lesson's README.md exists before starting. If it is missing, check that the claude-howto repository is checked out and that the lesson directory names are intact. The skill will warn you rather than invent questions.
