How to use the KrillinAI Horizontal Video Renderer agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The krillinai-render-horizontal skill teaches an AI agent how to run the KrillinAI command-line tool to produce widescreen (landscape) video files. It can burn bilingual subtitles over the original video, or combine a dubbed video with target-language subtitles. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask an agent for a render in plain language, and how to check that the output is good.

Quick start

  1. 1Install KrillinAI CLI. Make sure the KrillinAI CLI binary is installed and reachable through the KRILLINAI_CLI and KRILLINAI_CWD settings.
  2. 2Prepare the working directory. Confirm your working folder contains krillinai_manifest.json plus the source or TTS video and subtitle files.
  3. 3Install the companion skill. Install krillinai-cli so its references/cli-contract.md file is available to the agent.
  4. 4Download and unzip this skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  5. 5Ask for the render. Describe the variant you want, bilingual subtitles or dubbed with target-language subtitles, and name your working folder.
  6. 6Verify the output. Check that the JSON reports ok true, the MP4 has video and audio, and a preview frame shows the subtitles clearly.

What is an agent skill and what does this one do?

An agent skill is a folder of instructions and optional scripts that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill's description. This one is named krillinai-render-horizontal and covers a single job: the final render step for landscape video using KrillinAI's render-horizontal command.

The skill also tells the agent where output files should appear and how to confirm the render succeeded. Specifically, it checks that the terminal JSON reports "ok": true, that the output video exists, and that it has both video and audio streams. It can also extract a preview frame so you can check subtitle placement.

  • Bilingual subtitle video: the original video with bilingual subtitles, output as horizontal_bilingual.mp4 by default.
  • Dubbed video: a dubbed video with target-language subtitles, output as horizontal_dubbed.mp4 when the --dubbed flag is used.
  • Outputs are reported through the manifest key horizontal_video.

Before you start: what you need

This skill only drives the KrillinAI CLI. It cannot render video on its own, so the CLI must already be installed. The skill expects the binary to be reachable through the KRILLINAI_CLI and KRILLINAI_CWD settings.

You also need a KrillinAI working directory that contains krillinai_manifest.json and the source or text-to-speech (TTS) video and subtitle files. The skill reads the companion skill krillinai-cli and its cli-contract.md reference for binary location, configuration and JSON behaviour, so install that companion skill too. Finally, you need video tooling that can extract a preview frame for verification.

  • KrillinAI CLI binary installed, reachable via KRILLINAI_CLI and KRILLINAI_CWD.
  • A working directory containing krillinai_manifest.json and the video and subtitle files.
  • The companion skill krillinai-cli, including its references/cli-contract.md file.
  • Video tooling able to extract a preview frame.

How to install the skill

Option 1 is to download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into your personal skills folder, ~/.claude/skills/. Option 2 is to place it in a project's .claude/skills/ folder so it applies only to that project.

Option 3 is to upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills. Whichever route you choose, the skill's files include SKILL.md, and the companion krillinai-cli skill must be installed alongside it.

  • Personal: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project: unzip into your project's .claude/skills/
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP

How do you trigger the skill with a natural request?

You do not need to name the skill. The agent matches your request against the skill's description, which covers rendering landscape videos with KrillinAI CLI, including original video plus bilingual subtitles or dubbed video plus target-language subtitles. Ask for the outcome you want and point the agent at your working folder.

Be specific about the variant. Say whether you want bilingual subtitles over the original picture or a dubbed version with target-language subtitles, and say which working directory holds the files.

  • "Render the horizontal bilingual subtitle video from my KrillinAI folder at ~/projects/talk-01."
  • "Make the dubbed landscape version with target-language subtitles from this workdir."
  • "Render the widescreen video and check that it has both picture and sound."

What the commands look like

The skill runs the render from the working directory and passes the workdir, source video and subtitle file. For bilingual output it uses bilingual_srt.srt. For dubbed output it uses video_with_tts.mp4 with target_language_srt.srt and adds the --dubbed flag. You normally do not type these yourself, but reading them helps you understand what the agent is doing.

  • --workdir: directory containing krillinai_manifest.json.
  • --video: source video, which can be omitted if the manifest already has the correct input.
  • --subtitle: bilingual_srt.srt for bilingual, target_language_srt.srt for dubbed.
  • --audio: optional replacement audio.
  • --subtitle-style-file: optional JSON override merged with the default subtitle style.
(cd "$KRILLINAI_CWD" && "$KRILLINAI_CLI" render-horizontal \ --workdir "$WORKDIR" \ --video "$WORKDIR/origin_video.mp4" \ --subtitle "$WORKDIR/bilingual_srt.srt")

How do you check that the render worked?

The skill does not stop at the render command. It requires terminal JSON with "ok": true, confirms that the output video exists and has video and audio streams, and can extract a preview frame to check subtitle placement. Do the same check yourself: open the preview frame and make sure subtitles are readable and not cut off.

If the JSON does not report success, the skill points to cli-contract.md for manifest and error handling rather than guessing.

  • Terminal JSON shows "ok": true.
  • Output file exists and has video and audio streams.
  • A preview frame shows subtitles in the right place.

Safety notes: scripts and network

This skill runs scripts, so the agent will execute the KrillinAI CLI on your machine. Review the commands before approving them, and only point the skill at a working directory you trust. The skill does not use the network, according to its listing.

Use the skill only if you have the rights to the source video, because it produces new copies of that footage.

  • Runs scripts: yes. Check the commands the agent proposes.
  • Uses network: no.
  • Confirm you hold the rights to the source video before rendering.

Tips for better results

Keep your working folder tidy. The skill depends on krillinai_manifest.json and on the expected file names, such as origin_video.mp4, bilingual_srt.srt and target_language_srt.srt. Generate subtitles and dubbing in KrillinAI first, so the render step has the files it needs.

Use the preview frame check before sharing a file. Subtitle placement is the most common thing to look at, and a short check saves a re-render.

  • Generate subtitle and dubbing files in KrillinAI before asking for the render.
  • Keep the expected file names in the working folder.
  • Check a preview frame before you publish.

What people use it for

  • Adding bilingual subtitles to an existing landscape video for a second-language audience.
  • Producing a dubbed landscape version with target-language subtitles for a localization release.
  • Re-rendering a horizontal video after subtitle styling changes, using a subtitle style JSON override.
  • Checking that a rendered file has both picture and sound before it goes to a client.

Frequently asked questions

Is the krillinai-render-horizontal skill free?

The skill is published under the Apache-2.0 licence. The source does not state pricing for KrillinAI itself, so check the KrillinAI project for its terms before relying on it.

Do I need KrillinAI installed to use this skill?

Yes. The skill only drives the KrillinAI CLI and cannot render video on its own. The binary must be reachable through the KRILLINAI_CLI and KRILLINAI_CWD settings.

How do I install the krillinai-render-horizontal skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Can this skill make vertical or social-format videos?

No. It covers only the horizontal render command, so vertical or social-format videos are out of scope.

Why does the skill need the krillinai-cli companion skill?

The skill reads skills/krillinai-cli/references/cli-contract.md for binary location, execution working directory, configuration and JSON behaviour. Without that file, the agent lacks the rules it needs for manifest and error handling.

What should I do if the render does not report success?

Check that the terminal JSON shows "ok": true. If it does not, the skill directs the agent to cli-contract.md for manifest and error handling. Confirm the working directory contains krillinai_manifest.json and the expected subtitle files.
