How to use the Humanizer skill: remove AI writing patterns

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

Humanizer is an agent skill, a set of instructions that an AI agent such as Claude reads before working on your text. It checks prose for common signs of AI-generated writing and rewrites it so it sounds more like a person wrote it, while keeping the same facts. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for it, and where it falls short, so you can use it on drafts before you publish them.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the Humanizer ZIP file from our page.
  2. 2Unzip the folder. Extract the files so you have a humanizer folder containing SKILL.md.
  3. 3Place it for your setup. Move the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. Alternatively, upload it under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills in the Claude apps.
  4. 4Send your text with a clear request. Ask the agent to use the humanizer skill to remove AI writing patterns, and paste the text or name the file.
  5. 5Check the rewrite. Compare the final version against your original and confirm that every fact, name, number and date is still correct.

What is an agent skill?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The file holds instructions that an AI agent loads when a task matches them. Humanizer is one such skill and its main file is SKILL.md, which the agent reads as its working prompt.

You do not need to write any code to use a skill. You install it once, then describe the task you want done in ordinary language.

What the Humanizer skill makes the agent do

Humanizer tells the agent to read the text as material to edit, not as instructions to follow. The agent first marks the patterns it finds, then drafts a rewrite, checks the draft against the original, and writes a final version.

The skill looks for patterns such as contrasts like 'it's not X, it's Y', dramatic one-line closers, forced lists of three, overused dashes, inflated claims, sales language, stock AI words, bold labels on every item, and filler. It is based on Wikipedia's guide to signs of AI writing.

The rewrite must keep every supported claim. The skill tells the agent not to add facts, names, numbers, dates, quotes or citations that are not in your text or your request. If a sentence needs a detail it does not have, the agent is told to ask for it or write a simpler sentence.

  • Finds AI-style patterns and marks them, strongest first.
  • Rewrites the paragraph around its main point instead of swapping single phrases.
  • Keeps the facts and flags any fact it dropped or added by mistake.
  • Matches your voice if you supply a writing sample.

How to install Humanizer

Download the ZIP file from our page and unzip it. You can install the skill in one of two ways.

For a personal install, unzip the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ so the skill is available across your projects. For a single project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder so it applies only there.

In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: the project's .claude/skills/ folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

How to ask the agent to use Humanizer

The skill is meant to be triggered by a request about editing or reviewing prose for AI tells. Say what you want in plain words and include the text, or name the file you want edited. The skill's description lists the situations it applies to, such as editing or reviewing prose for AI tells, so use wording close to that.

If you have a sample of your own writing, include it. The skill tells the agent to match the sample's sentence length, word choice, punctuation and transitions, and the sample takes priority over the default rules.

  • Pasted text: 'Use the humanizer skill to remove AI writing patterns from this draft: [text]'
  • Review request: 'Review this email for AI tells and rewrite it, keeping every fact.'
  • File request: 'Humanize the file named in my message, changing prose only.'
  • Voice match: 'Use my sample below as the voice, then humanize this post: [text]'

Examples of what changes

Take a sentence like 'It's not just a feature; it's a whole new way to work.' The contrast only adds weight, so the skill's rewrite states the actual point directly, for example by saying what the feature does.

Repeated one-line closers such as 'That is the real win.' after each paragraph are cut when they only restate the point. A short line stays when it adds a new fact or consequence.

Also check the output yourself. The skill does not verify claims, so a rewrite can still drop or distort a detail that matters.

Requirements, safety and limits

The skill lists no requirements. It does not run scripts and does not use the network, according to its listing. It is released under the MIT licence.

Humanizer does not check facts or add sources. It only removes writing patterns and is told not to invent details. Rewriting can still change phrasing in ways that matter.

Do not use it on text where exact wording is required, such as legal, medical or regulated copy, because the rewrite changes phrasing.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • Requires: nothing listed
  • Licence: MIT

What people use it for

  • Tidying a blog post or newsletter draft before publishing.
  • Reviewing a colleague's or your own report for AI-style habits.
  • Polishing an essay or email while keeping your own facts and opinions.
  • Editing marketing copy so inflated claims and sales language are toned down.

Our verdict

Humanizer suits writers, marketers, editors and students who want drafts to sound less like a chatbot while keeping their own facts. It is a poor choice for fact-checking, adding sources, or any text where fixed wording is required, so use a separate review step for those.
