How to use the Google Meeting Prep agent skill (gws)
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Google Meeting Prep skill (gws-workflow-meeting-prep) lets an AI agent look up your next upcoming meeting on Google Calendar and summarise its agenda, attendees and description, including any linked documents. This guide explains what agent skills are, how to install this one, how to ask for it in plain language, and what it needs to run safely. By the end you will be able to get a pre-meeting briefing from your agent without changing anything in your calendar.
Quick start
- 1Install gws and set up authentication. Install the gws command-line tool and configure Google Workspace authentication through the gws-shared skill. If the shared skill is missing, run gws generate-skills.
- 2Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it so the skill folder contains SKILL.md.
- 3Place the skill folder. Move the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. Alternatively, upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- 4Ask about your next meeting. Type a natural request such as "Who is attending my next meeting?" The agent uses the skill when your request matches it.
- 5Check the output. Review the agenda, attendees and linked documents returned. Use --calendar or --format if you need a different calendar or output format.
What is an agent skill and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that gives an AI agent instructions for a specific task. When the skill is installed, the agent can use it when your request matches the skill's description.
This skill covers the Google Workflow task of preparing for your next meeting. Once installed, the agent can find your next upcoming meeting on Google Calendar and pull together its agenda, the list of attendees and the event description, including any linked documents. It does this through the gws command-line tool.
- Reads the next upcoming event on your calendar (the primary calendar by default).
- Returns the agenda, attendees and description, including linked documents.
- Is read-only: the skill says it never modifies your data.
What you need before installing
The skill cannot run on its own. It depends on two things that must be in place first.
The skill also relies on a separate shared skill, gws-shared, which handles Google Workspace access and authentication. The skill's own file points to it as a prerequisite. If that shared skill is missing, the source says to run gws generate-skills to create it.
- The gws command-line tool (Google Workspace CLI) installed.
- Google Workspace authentication configured through the gws-shared skill.
- Access to a Google Calendar, which means a Google Workspace account.
How to install the Google Meeting Prep skill
Download the ZIP for this skill from this page and unzip it. You have two options depending on how you use your agent.
For Claude Code, place the unzipped skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/ to make it available everywhere, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project.
In the Claude apps, you can upload the skill instead under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.
- Personal (all projects): ~/.claude/skills/
- Single project: the .claude/skills/ folder inside that project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload
~/.claude/skills/How to trigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need to type the skill name. Ask the agent about your upcoming meeting in ordinary language, and it will use the skill when your request matches its description, which is about preparing for your next meeting.
Good requests mention the next meeting, the agenda, who is attending or the documents shared for it. Examples are below.
- What's my next meeting about?
- Who is attending my next meeting?
- Prepare me for my next meeting, including any linked docs.
- What documents were shared for my upcoming meeting?
Run the commands directly and use the options
You can also run the underlying command yourself to check the output. The skill's examples use the plain command, and a version that points at a specific calendar by name.
The --calendar flag sets the calendar ID and defaults to primary. The --format flag sets the output format: json (the default), table, yaml or csv.
- --calendar: calendar ID; default is primary.
- --format: json (default), table, yaml or csv.
gws workflow +meeting-prep
gws workflow +meeting-prep --calendar WorkSafety notes: scripts and network access
This skill runs scripts and uses the network. It calls Google Calendar through the gws tool to read your event data, so it needs your Google Workspace authentication to work.
The skill states that it is read-only and never modifies your data. Its scope is reading the next upcoming event with its attendees and description. Authentication and global security rules are defined in the gws-shared skill, which you should read before use.
- Runs scripts: yes. Uses network: yes.
- Read-only by design: it cannot edit or delete calendar events.
- Review the gws-shared skill for auth, global flags and security rules.
What people use it for
- Getting a quick briefing on the agenda before a meeting starts.
- Checking who is attending when you cannot recall the invite list.
- Finding which documents were linked in a calendar event's description.
- Pulling a calendar summary into a larger agent workflow for a developer already using gws.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the Google Meeting Prep agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What are the requirements for this skill?
You need the gws command-line tool (Google Workspace CLI), Google Workspace authentication configured via the gws-shared skill, and access to a Google Calendar. Without a Google Workspace account and gws set up, the skill cannot run.
Is the Google Meeting Prep skill free?
The source is licensed under Apache-2.0. The source does not state pricing for the skill, so check the licence and your Google Workspace plan for any costs.
Can this skill change or delete my calendar events?
No. The skill is read-only and never modifies your data. It is designed to read the next upcoming event, so it cannot edit calendar events.
Why does the skill say it needs gws-shared?
The gws-shared skill handles Google Workspace access, authentication and global flags. The skill points to it as a prerequisite. If it is missing, run gws generate-skills to create it.
What if I need a different calendar or output format?
Use the --calendar flag to choose a calendar ID, which defaults to primary. Use --format to pick json (default), table, yaml or csv.

Our verdict
This skill suits professionals who want a fast pre-meeting briefing, people who often forget attendees or shared documents, and developers already using the gws CLI. It is not suitable if you lack a Google Workspace account or the gws setup, or if you need to edit calendar events, since it is read-only by design.
