How to use the Find Your Level Quiz agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Find Your Level skill is an agent skill for the AI Engineering from Scratch curriculum. It makes your AI agent run a 10-question multiple-choice quiz on math, classical machine learning, deep learning, NLP and transformers, and applied AI, then recommends a starting phase so you can skip material you already know. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and what to watch out for.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the find-your-level skill ZIP from this page.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  4. 4Ask a natural question. Say something like "where should I start?" or "find my level" to trigger the quiz.
  5. 5Answer the 10 questions. Reply to each round with the letter for each question and note your area score after every round.
  6. 6Read your path. Review the entry point and the phase table, then use /start-learning to save the plan or /learn to begin the first lesson.

What an agent skill is and what this one makes the agent do

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells an AI agent how to perform a specific task. Once installed, the agent reads that file and follows its instructions when a matching request comes up.

This skill turns the agent into a placement quiz administrator. It asks 10 questions in five rounds of two, one round per knowledge area. After each round it tells you your score for that area. It does not explain the answers until the quiz is finished.

  • Scores each question 1 for correct or 0 for wrong or blank, giving a total from 0 to 10.
  • Maps your total score to an entry point, from Phase 1 (Math Foundations) up to Phase 14 (Agent Engineering).
  • Builds a learning path table covering all 20 phases, marking each as Skip, Review or Do, with hour estimates from the course roadmap.

Install the Find Your Level skill

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. You can install it in one of two places: your personal skills folder, which makes it available in every project, or a single project's skills folder.

To use it in the Claude apps instead, upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ so the find-your-level folder sits inside it.
  • Project install: unzip into the .claude/skills/ folder of your project.
  • Claude apps: upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Check what you need before you start

The skill needs an agent that can read SKILL.md files. The source names Claude Code as an example. The course roadmap is needed for the hour estimates, and the skill can get it in one of two ways: from a local clone of the rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch repository, or over the network from GitHub.

If you have no local clone, the skill fetches ROADMAP.md from the repository's main branch on GitHub, so network access is required in that case.

  • An agent that can read SKILL.md files, for example Claude Code.
  • Either a local clone of rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch or network access to fetch ROADMAP.md from GitHub.
  • The skill does not run scripts. It does use the network when it fetches the roadmap.

Trigger the quiz with natural requests

You do not need a special command. The skill is meant to start when you ask where to begin or what you already know. The SKILL.md file lists these trigger phrases. Ask in plain language using wording close to them.

  • "Where should I start?"
  • "Find my level."
  • "What do I know about AI?"
  • "Which phase should I begin with?"
  • "Assess my knowledge."
  • "Give me a placement test."
  • "Can I skip ahead?"

Take the quiz and read your results

The agent asks each question as a lettered list. If your environment has a structured question tool, the agent may use it instead. Reply with the letter for each question. After both questions in a round, you get that area's score, for example Math & Statistics: 2/2.

After all five rounds the agent shows an area breakdown and total. It then reveals the entry point and the personalized path table. The explanations for the answers come only at the end.

  • Areas: Math & Statistics, Classical ML, Deep Learning, NLP & Transformers, Applied AI.
  • Score 0-3 starts at Phase 1; 4-5 at Phase 3; 6-7 at Phase 7; 8-9 at Phase 11; 10 at Phase 14.
  • An area scoring 1 of 2 marks a related phase as Review rather than Skip.

Use the output to save or start learning

After the path is shown, the skill offers two follow-up commands. The source describes them as follows.

  • /start-learning saves the placement into a persistent LEARNING.md study plan.
  • /learn starts the first lesson, taught interactively.

What people use it for

  • A learner new to AI checks whether they can skip the math and classical ML basics.
  • A developer with some ML background decides whether to start at transformers or at agents.
  • An instructor or mentor runs a quick self-check before a course.
  • Someone returning to the material after a break checks which phases they can skim.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the find-your-level agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What do I need to run the find-your-level skill?

You need an agent that can read SKILL.md files, such as Claude Code. You also need either a local clone of the rohitg00/ai-engineering-from-scratch repository or network access so the skill can fetch ROADMAP.md from GitHub.

Is the Find Your Level skill free?

The skill is listed under the MIT licence. The source does not state any price, so check the licence and the repository for the terms that apply to you.

Does the skill run scripts or access the internet?

According to the listing, it does not run scripts, but it does use the network. If you have no local clone of the repository, it fetches ROADMAP.md from GitHub to read the hour estimates.

Can I get a certificate or an accurate skill rating from this quiz?

No. It is a 10-question multiple-choice quiz with no validation beyond the answers, so it is a quick placement check and not a formal certification or precise skill rating.

Why does the agent not explain the answers right away?

The skill is designed to hold explanations until all five rounds are complete, so that the quiz stays unbiased. If you want the answers explained first, this skill is not the right fit.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you are new to AI or have some ML background and want a quick, low-effort way to avoid repeating basics before you start the AI Engineering course. Skip it if you need a formal certification or a validated skill rating, or if you want the answers explained up front. Its 10 questions give a rough starting point, not a precise measure of what you know.
