How to use the Find Skills agent skill: install and trigger it
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
Find Skills is an agent skill that helps your AI agent act as a guide to the open catalogue of installable agent skills. If you have never used agent skills before, it is a good starting point: instead of searching for packages yourself, you describe what you want to do and the agent looks for a matching skill. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and what to check before installing anything it recommends.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the find-skills ZIP from this page and unzip it. The folder contains SKILL.md.
- 2Place the folder. Move the find-skills folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into .claude/skills/ inside one project.
- 3Or upload in the apps. In the Claude apps, open Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
- 4Ask in plain language. Describe the task, for example "Is there a skill for writing tests?"
- 5Review the suggestion. Check the install count, the source and the skill itself before agreeing to install.
- 6Install the skill. Run the suggested npx skills add command, or let the agent install it after you approve.
What the Find Skills skill makes the agent do
Agent skills are modular packages that extend what an agent can do, usually with specialised knowledge, workflows and tools. The Find Skills skill teaches the agent to look for these packages on your behalf when you ask questions such as "how do I do X", "find a skill for X" or "is there a skill that can...".
The skill does not add new abilities to the agent by itself. It helps you find and add other skills. Its description says it should be used when you are looking for functionality that might exist as an installable skill.
- Checks the skills.sh leaderboard first for well-known skills in the relevant domain
- Runs a keyword search with the npx skills find command if the leaderboard does not cover your need
- Compares options by install count and source before recommending one
- Suggests a skill along with its install command and a link to skills.sh
- Can install a skill you choose
Install the Find Skills skill
Download the find-skills ZIP from this page and unzip it. The skill is a single file, SKILL.md. Then place the folder in one of the following locations, depending on whether you want it available everywhere or only in one project.
You can also upload the skill in the Claude apps through Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal (all projects): ~/.claude/skills/find-skills/
- Single project: .claude/skills/find-skills/ inside your project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
~/.claude/skills/find-skills/SKILL.mdTrigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need a special command. Describe the task in plain language, and the skill is used when your request suggests a capability might exist as an installable skill. The skill's guidance covers requests about common tasks, specialised capabilities, extending the agent, searching for tools or templates, and domains such as design, testing or deployment.
Name the domain and the task as specifically as you can. The skill identifies the domain, the specific task and whether a common skill probably exists before it searches.
- "How do I make my React app faster?"
- "Find a skill for writing end-to-end tests."
- "Is there a skill that can help me review pull requests?"
- "I need to create a changelog. Is there something for that?"
What the skill runs and how the search works
The skill uses the Skills CLI, run through npx. The main commands it uses are npx skills find [query] [--owner <owner>] to search by keyword, npx skills add <package> to install a skill from GitHub or other sources, and npx skills update to update all installed skills. Browse the catalogue at https://skills.sh/.
When the leaderboard does not answer your question, the agent searches with the find command. For example, "how do I make my React app faster?" becomes npx skills find react performance.
npx skills find react performanceCheck quality before you install a recommended skill
The skill tells the agent not to recommend a skill based only on search results. It asks the agent to check three things: the install count (preferring skills with 1K+ installs and being cautious under 100), the source reputation (official sources such as vercel-labs, anthropics and microsoft are treated as more trustworthy than unknown authors), and the GitHub star count of the source repository.
Popularity is a signal, not a security review. Read a skill's contents before you install it, particularly if it comes from an author you do not know.
- Install count: prefer 1K+, be cautious under 100
- Source: official sources are more trustworthy than unknown authors
- Repository: treat a source repo with fewer than 100 stars with skepticism
- Read the skill before installing it
Safety notes: scripts and network access
This skill runs scripts and uses the network. It needs Node.js and npx to run the Skills CLI, and internet access to reach skills.sh and GitHub-hosted skill sources.
The skill's install step uses the -g flag to install globally (user-level) and -y to skip confirmation prompts. Skipping prompts means you will not be asked to confirm an install, so only allow this when you already trust the skill. Installing without reading a skill is the main risk to avoid.
- Requires Node.js and npx
- Requires internet access to skills.sh and GitHub
- Skips confirmation prompts when the agent uses -y
- Installs globally when the agent uses -g
npx skills add <owner/repo@skill> -g -yTips for better results
Specific keywords give better search results than single broad words. If a search returns nothing, try an alternative term. The skill's own examples suggest trying "deployment" or "ci-cd" if "deploy" does not work. Many skills come from vercel-labs/agent-skills or ComposioHQ/awesome-claude-skills, which are good places to look first.
- Use "react testing" rather than "testing"
- Try alternatives such as "deployment" or "ci-cd" for "deploy"
- Search the categories: web development, testing, DevOps, documentation, code quality, design and productivity
What people use it for
- Finding a React or Next.js performance skill before starting an optimisation task
- Locating a testing skill for Jest or Playwright end-to-end tests
- Finding a code review or PR review workflow for a team
- Searching for a changelog or documentation skill for a release
- Discovering a deployment or CI/CD skill for a DevOps task
Frequently asked questions
What is the find-skills agent skill?
It is an agent skill that helps your agent discover and install other agent skills from the open catalogue at skills.sh. It searches with the npx skills command and suggests options with install commands. It does not add new abilities to the agent on its own.
How do I install the find-skills skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Place the find-skills folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in .claude/skills/ inside a project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What do I need to run find-skills?
You need Node.js and npx to run the Skills CLI, and internet access to reach skills.sh and GitHub-hosted skill sources. The skill runs scripts and uses the network.
Is the find-skills skill free?
The skill is published under the MIT licence. This page does not state pricing for the skills themselves, so check the source repository for the licence terms that apply to each skill you install.
Is it safe to install skills the agent recommends?
Install counts and popularity are not a security audit. Read a skill before installing it, and be careful with the -y flag, which skips confirmation prompts. Prefer official sources and well-established skills.
Why doesn't the agent find a skill for my task?
The search may not match your wording. Try more specific keywords or alternative terms such as deployment or ci-cd. If nothing relevant exists, the agent can offer to help directly, or you can create your own skill with npx skills init.

Our verdict
Use find-skills if you want to extend your agent but do not know which skills exist, or if you want a shortlist of popular, established options before installing. Skip it for tasks the agent can already do directly, and do not use it if you lack Node.js and npm, since the core commands run through npx. Read any skill before you install it.
