How to use the Financial Statement Analysis agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The financial-statement-analysis skill turns an AI agent into a financial-statement analyst. You give it a balance sheet, income statement and cash-flow statement, and it checks that the numbers tie together, calculates profitability, solvency, efficiency and cash-flow ratios, and writes an interpretation report as a Word document. This guide explains what agent skills are, how to install this one, how to trigger it, and where its limits are.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the financial-statement-analysis ZIP from this page and unzip it. The folder should contain SKILL.md.
  2. 2Place the skill folder. Move the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into .claude/skills/ inside a project. Alternatively, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Check Word tools are available. Confirm your agent environment has Word document tools, since the skill delivers its report as a Word document.
  4. 4Gather your statements. Prepare the balance sheet, income statement and cash-flow statement as PDFs, screenshots or tables, with at least two periods if you want trends.
  5. 5Ask in plain language. Describe the analysis you want, such as interpreting the three statements, and attach the files along with the company, currency and audience.
  6. 6Answer the follow-up questions. The agent will ask about missing context and confirm any figures that do not reconcile before writing the report.
  7. 7Review the Word report. Check the executive summary, ratio tables, warning signals and limitations, then decide whether to request industry peer data.

What does the skill make the agent do?

Once installed, the agent works as a financial-statement analyst. It first confirms what is missing, such as the reporting entity, periods, accounting standard, currency and whether the statements are audited. It then reconciles the data: assets should equal liabilities plus equity, net profit should tie to the cash-flow statement, and revenue and cost should be on the same basis.

It then computes four groups of ratios, showing the formula for each, and builds a Word report with an executive summary, a statement overview table, one section per ratio group, signals to watch, and limitations.

  • Profitability: gross margin, operating margin, net margin, ROE, ROA
  • Solvency: current ratio, quick ratio, debt-to-asset ratio, interest coverage
  • Efficiency: receivable days, inventory days, payable days, total asset turnover
  • Cash flow: operating cash flow / net profit, free cash flow, cash-flow pattern

Install the skill from the ZIP download

Download the ZIP for this skill from our page and unzip it. Then place the folder in one of two locations, depending on how you want to use it. A personal install works across your projects, while a project install applies only to one project.

The skill is described in a single file named SKILL.md, so the unzipped folder should contain that file.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: unzip into the .claude/skills/ folder inside your project
  • Claude apps: upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Trigger the skill with a natural request

You do not need a special command. Ask for the kind of analysis you want in plain language, and attach your statements as PDFs, screenshots or tables. The skill is written for requests such as interpreting the three statements in an annual report, or looking at how profitability and solvency changed over several years.

Give the agent as much context as you can in the first message: the company name, the periods covered, the currency, whether the statements are audited, and who the report is for (management, investors or lenders). It will ask for anything missing.

  • Interpret the three statements in this annual report
  • Analyse how this company's profitability and solvency changed over the last three years
  • Check my small business's financial health from these statements and tell me where cash is tight

What you get back: the Word report

The output is a Word document titled with the entity and period, followed by a financial statement analysis. The executive summary contains at most five conclusions, each with an observation, a figure and an implication. Each ratio section includes a table with the current value, prior value, change and formula, plus an interpretation that links movements to business actions such as price increases, inventory reduction, payment-term shifts or new borrowing.

The report also covers signals to watch, such as profit growing while operating cash flow falls, and a limitations section listing the data source, audit status and any missing items. The skill asks whether you want industry peer data added after delivery.

What the skill needs and safety notes

The skill refers to Word document tools available in the agent environment. If your agent cannot create Word documents, it cannot deliver the report in the intended format. You also need to supply the financial statements yourself, as PDF, screenshots or tabular data.

This skill does not run scripts and does not use the network, according to its listing. It also avoids fraud claims and buy, sell or credit recommendations. Industry averages are quoted only when you provide them or a web search finds a clearly identified source; that search is the agent's own behaviour, not something the skill itself does.

  • Requires: Word document tools in the agent environment
  • Requires: your own financial statements as PDF, screenshots or tables
  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no

Tips for better results

Supply two or three periods if you want trends. With only one period, the skill says trends are not possible and performs structural analysis only. Flag any known accounting policy change or consolidation change between periods, because the skill treats these as invalidating straight trend comparisons unless they are identified first.

If a ratio cannot be derived from your data, for example because interest expense is not broken out, the report marks it as cannot be computed rather than estimating it. Supplying the missing line item will allow the calculation.

  • Give at least two periods for trend analysis
  • Mention any change in accounting policy or consolidation scope
  • Upload clean tables where possible so figures can be checked against each other

What people use it for

  • A finance student working through an annual report and checking how the three statements connect
  • A manager reviewing a company's profitability and solvency across two or three years before a internal discussion
  • A small business owner checking whether profit is turning into cash and how long current obligations are covered
  • An analyst producing a first-pass ratio review that highlights warning signals for follow-up work

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the financial statement analysis agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in .claude/skills/ inside a project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What does the financial-statement-analysis skill require?

It requires Word document tools in the agent environment, because the report is delivered as a Word document. You also need to supply your balance sheet, income statement and cash-flow statement as PDFs, screenshots or tabular data.

Is this skill free to use?

The skill is published under the Apache-2.0 licence. Check the licence text for the terms that apply to use and redistribution.

Does the skill run scripts or access the internet?

According to its listing, it runs no scripts and uses no network. Industry averages are only quoted if you provide them or a web search finds a clearly identified source.

Can I use it to decide whether to buy shares or approve a loan?

No. The skill gives no buy, sell or credit recommendations and says so in its interpretation. Decisions that need professional judgement should be made with a qualified analyst, so this skill is best used for a first-pass review.

What happens if my statements are incomplete?

Any ratio that cannot be derived from the data you supply is marked as cannot be computed rather than estimated. Adding the missing line items, such as interest expense, lets the agent calculate those ratios.

Our verdict

This skill suits finance students learning to read annual reports, managers wanting a first-pass ratio review over two or three years, and small business owners checking their own financial health. It is not a substitute for professional judgement on investment or lending decisions, and it is a poor fit for statements that are incomplete or where you need industry benchmarks you cannot supply.
