How to use the fal game asset generator agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The fal-assets skill lets an AI coding agent create new game art, audio and 3D models for a mod using fal.ai's hosted generative models. It is written for modders and developers who need sprites, textures or sounds without making them by hand. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for assets in plain language, and what it needs before it runs.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the fal-assets ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  2. 2Create a fal.ai key. Create an API key at https://fal.ai/dashboard/keys.
  3. 3Store the key safely. Run um fal key set to store it, or set FAL_KEY in your environment or a .env file in the working folder.
  4. 4Check the key source. Run um fal key status to confirm which source is used, with the key masked.
  5. 5Ask for an asset. Describe the asset, its view, size and purpose in plain language, such as a transparent sprite for your mod.
  6. 6Review the output and manifest. Check the downloaded files and the fal_manifest.jsonl entry, which records the endpoint, inputs, seed and request id.

What an agent skill is and what fal-assets makes the agent do

An agent skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that tells an AI agent when and how to perform a task. The agent reads the skill when your request matches its description, then follows its instructions and commands.

With fal-assets installed, the agent can generate assets that do not exist yet in your mod: transparent sprites and icons, consistent variants and animation frames, pixel art, seamless tiling textures, PBR material maps, image-to-3D models with auto-rigging, sound effects, music, voice lines and short video clips. Each generated file is logged with its endpoint, inputs, seed and request id so it can be regenerated later.

  • Sprites and icons with transparent backgrounds
  • Seamless textures and PBR maps (basecolor, normal, roughness, metalness, height)
  • Image-to-3D models in GLB format, with optional auto-rigging
  • Sound effects, music and voice lines
  • Trailer or cutscene video clips

Install the fal-assets skill from the ZIP

Download the ZIP for the fal-assets skill from this page and unzip it. The skill is a folder that contains SKILL.md. To make it available to Claude Code, put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for all your projects, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder for that project only.

If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.

  • Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: unzip into the project's .claude/skills/ folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill

Set up your fal.ai API key

Create a key at https://fal.ai/dashboard/keys. The um fal tool reads FAL_KEY from the environment first, then from a key stored with um fal key set (on Linux this uses the desktop keyring through secret-tool, or an owner-only ~/.secrets/fal-key file where secret-tool is not available), then from a FAL_KEY line in a .env file in the working folder.

Run um fal key status to see which source is in use; keys are shown masked. Never paste the key into mod files or configs.

  • Check the source with um fal key status
  • Do not write the key into mod files; um publish check flags leaked keys
um fal key status

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. Describe the asset you need and mention what it is for. The skill triggers when your mod needs new art, audio or 3D models, or when you mention fal, sprites, textures, models, SFX or music for a game.

Be specific about the view, size and style. The skill's guidance is to look at the game's existing assets first and match their pixel size, outline, palette and perspective. Name the engine's orientation conventions when they matter, for example that a held weapon should point right.

  • Make a transparent sprite of a plasma rifle, horizontal side view, muzzle pointing right, to match my Terraria-style items
  • Generate a seamless mossy cobblestone texture for my floor tiles
  • Create a short laser sound effect, punchy, about 1.2 seconds
  • Make a 90-second tense chiptune boss music track at 150 bpm

Know which commands the agent uses

For assets that must be saved to disk, the agent uses um fal with a recipe such as sprite, image, edit, texture, pbr, model3d, rig, sfx, music, voice or video. Each run uploads local inputs, waits for the result, downloads every output file and appends the details to <out>/fal_manifest.jsonl. The um fal <recipe> --help command lists the options for each recipe.

For quick looks where a URL is enough, the agent can use the fal MCP server. The skill also covers discovery commands such as um fal search, um fal schema and um fal price, so you can check a model's inputs and price before a large batch.

  • um fal sprite "<subject, view, style>" --name x for transparent sprites
  • um fal texture "mossy cobblestone" for seamless tiles
  • um fal sfx "plasma rifle shot, punchy" --seconds 1.2 for sound effects
  • um fal price <endpoint> to check cost before a batch
um fal sprite "plasma rifle, side view, muzzle pointing right" --name plasma_rifle

Safety, network use and optional services

fal calls go over the internet, so prompts and any images you send leave your machine. If your project cannot send data to a third-party cloud service, use the local ComfyUI option for images instead (um comfy status, then um comfy image). ComfyUI has no audio, 3D or video recipes.

The skill runs scripts and uses the network. Each generation is billed per call, and the agent may run large batches, so check prices first. The skill does not verify the licence terms of the underlying generative models, so do not assume output is licence-clean for a commercial release. Sprixen and Voidless are separate paid 2D art services with their own accounts and keys; the agent should ask you before using either.

  • Requires a fal.ai API key (FAL_KEY) and the um CLI (Universal Modder)
  • Optional: fal MCP server, or pip install fal for the fal api command
  • Optional on Linux: secret-tool for keyring storage
  • Optional: local ComfyUI server for images
  • Verify licence terms of generated output yourself before commercial release

What people use it for

  • Creating transparent weapon, item or enemy sprites that match an existing game's pixel style
  • Generating seamless floor and wall textures plus PBR maps for a mod's terrain
  • Turning a concept image into a textured GLB 3D model and auto-rigging a humanoid character
  • Producing sound effects, background music and voice lines for a game mod
  • Making short trailer or cutscene clips from a still image

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the fal-assets agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.

Do I need a fal.ai API key to use fal-assets?

Yes, for fal-based generation the skill needs a fal.ai API key, provided as FAL_KEY. For images only, the skill can use a local ComfyUI server instead, which needs no fal key.

Is fal-assets free to use?

The skill is MIT licensed. fal.ai bills each generation per call, and the agent may run large batches, so check prices with um fal price before generating a lot.

Can I use fal-assets without sending data to the cloud?

Not for fal calls, since they go over the internet. For images you can use the local ComfyUI option with um comfy, which has no audio, 3D or video recipes.

What are the alternatives to fal-assets for game art?

The source mentions Sprixen and Voidless as separate paid 2D art services, and the local ComfyUI server for images. Those need their own accounts and keys, and the agent should ask before using them.

Why won't my fal MCP tools connect?

The fal MCP server reads FAL_KEY from the agent's environment, and it does not connect without it. Start the agent with FAL_KEY set, or use the OAuth endpoint in the skill instructions, and in the meantime the agent can use um fal.

Our verdict

fal-assets suits modders and developers who want new sprites, textures, models and audio generated quickly, with each output traced in a manifest for regeneration. It is a poor fit if your project cannot send prompts to a cloud service, if you have no fal.ai budget, or if you need guaranteed licence-clean art for commercial release, since the skill does not verify the underlying model terms.
