How to use the Discord Release Announcement Writer agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
This guide explains the Discord Release Announcement Writer, an agent skill from the Paperclip project that turns a stable release changelog into a copy-pasteable Discord announcement. It is written for people who have never installed an agent skill before. By the end you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask an agent to use it, and what to check before anything is posted.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it so you have the folder containing SKILL.md.
- 2Choose an install location. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or in .claude/skills/ inside a project. In the Claude apps, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- 3Confirm prerequisites. Make sure you have access to the Paperclip repository, its release changelog file, the Paperclip API, and a release issue with an assigned routine.
- 4Ask in plain language. Request the Discord announcement for a release issue or ask to refresh the discord_announcement document.
- 5Check the draft. Compare the version, date, highlights and contributors against the changelog before anything is posted.
- 6Post manually. Copy the block from the issue comment or document into Discord after review, and remove any optional sections that do not apply.
What an agent skill is and what this one makes the agent do
An agent skill is a folder of written instructions that an AI agent reads when a request matches the skill's description. This skill is a single file, SKILL.md, with no scripts.
When the skill is active, the agent takes a Paperclip release changelog and writes one Discord announcement in the project maintainer's house style. The draft includes highlights, roadmap themes, contributor thanks and install instructions. The agent saves the draft as a document called discord_announcement on the release issue and posts it as a comment so a human can copy it out.
- Output: a single fenced markdown block ready to paste into Discord
- Uses Discord emoji shortcodes such as :paperclip: rather than Unicode emoji
- Keeps the version, date and highlights matched to the changelog file
Install the skill from the ZIP download
Download the ZIP for this skill from this page and unzip it. The skill folder contains SKILL.md. Place that folder in one of two locations, depending on how you want to use it.
For all of your projects, put it in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, put it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder. If you use the Claude apps instead, you can upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: .claude/skills/ inside your project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload
Prerequisites: what the skill needs before it runs
The skill does not work from the description alone. It needs a release changelog to follow, access to the Paperclip API and a release issue to write on.
The skill makes network calls. It reads and writes issue documents through the Paperclip API. It does not run scripts.
- Access to the Paperclip repository and its release changelog file
- Access to the Paperclip API to read and write issue documents
- A release issue with an assigned routine
- The changelog file, which the skill is designed to follow
PUT /api/issues/{releaseIssueId}/documents/discord_announcementTrigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need a special command. Ask the agent in plain language about a release issue or a Discord announcement. The skill's description says it applies when a release issue needs a copy-pasteable Discord post or a refreshed discord_announcement document.
If a discord_announcement document already exists, the skill fetches it first and passes the current baseRevisionId. If the version has changed, it notes the change in the issue comment instead of overwriting silently.
- "Write the Discord announcement for the stable release on this release issue."
- "Refresh the discord_announcement document for the new version and date."
- "Draft the Discord post from the release changelog and paste it as a comment."
Review the draft before it is posted
The skill ends the template with an @everyone ping wrapped in spoiler markers, so it pings only when the spoiler is removed. Check the draft before anyone posts it.
The skill says it should never run in isolation. If the changelog changes, run it again so the version, date, contributors and highlights stay in sync. Press and asks sections are optional and should be removed if the source does not support them.
- Confirm the version, date and full release notes link match the changelog
- Confirm the contributor list excludes bots and the excluded names the changelog skill lists
- Check that the install channels named in the post are correct
- Remove the Press and What I need from you sections if they have no real content
Safety notes on scripts and network access
This skill runs no scripts. It does use the network, because it calls the Paperclip API to read and write the discord_announcement document and to post the comment on the release issue.
Because the agent writes to issues and posts comments, review the issue activity after each run. The skill's own safety guidance is to have a human review the draft before it goes out.
- Scripts: none
- Network: yes, Paperclip API calls for issue documents and comments
- Human review is required before posting the @everyone ping
Tips for getting a good draft
The announcement is not a copy of the changelog. The changelog is exhaustive, and the announcement picks a few highlights and adds a short forward-looking section. Give the agent a current changelog and an up-to-date release issue so it has the right material.
If you are reusing this pattern for another project, the template and language notes are the parts to adapt. Keep the same rule that the announcement must match its changelog file.
- Refresh the draft whenever the changelog is updated
- Highlight bullets are one sentence each, written from the user's point of view
- Do not expect the skill to work without a matching changelog file
What people use it for
- Drafting a stable release announcement for the Paperclip Discord from its changelog
- Refreshing an existing discord_announcement document when the version or date changes
- Adapting the same release-announcement pattern for another project's changelog
- Producing a copy-pasteable post for community or marketing staff who do not write release notes
Frequently asked questions
Is the release-changelog-discord-message skill free to use?
The source file is licensed under the MIT licence, as shown on this page. The source does not state pricing for any other service, so check the licence text in the repository before reuse.
What do I need to install the skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Does this skill run scripts?
No. The skill is a written set of instructions in SKILL.md and does not run scripts. It does use the network to read and write issue documents through the Paperclip API.
Can I use this skill without a Paperclip changelog?
The skill is designed to follow a matching changelog file. Without one, the output may be inaccurate, so it is not recommended.
Will the skill post to Discord automatically?
The skill saves the draft as a document on the release issue and posts it as a comment so a human can copy it out. The draft ends with an @everyone ping, so a person should review it before posting.
How is this different from the changelog skill?
The changelog skill writes the full changelog. This skill turns that changelog into a shorter, opinionated Discord post with highlights, roadmap themes and contributor thanks.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you maintain the Paperclip project or need to draft a Discord release post from a matching changelog, and you are willing to review the output before it goes out. Skip it if you only want to install or run Paperclip, since it does nothing for the product itself, or if your project has no matching changelog file to follow.
