How to use the Discord Clawd Relay agent skill (discord-clawd)

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The discord-clawd skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent how to reach a Discord-connected OpenClaw agent or session. It is written for developers and maintainers who already run an OpenClaw relay and want their assistant to ask that agent a question or post a message to a team channel. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to phrase requests so the agent picks it up, and which safety limits to respect.

Quick start

  1. 1Check prerequisites. Confirm Python 3 is installed and that your agent-scripts clone is at ~/Projects/agent-scripts. Confirm the openclaw_relay.py helper exists in that clone.
  2. 2Install the skill folder. Download the ZIP from this page, unzip it, and place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ directory. Or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3List targets. Run the targets command from the agent-scripts folder to see which aliases your OpenClaw setup exposes.
  4. 4Resolve your target. Run resolve with the target name to confirm the alias exists before sending anything real.
  5. 5Send a private test ask. Use ask with a harmless message such as Reply with exactly OK to confirm the route works.
  6. 6Use publish or force-send deliberately. Use publish when the session should decide. Use force-send only when you have explicitly chosen to post and have reviewed the content.

What the discord-clawd skill lets the agent do

An agent skill is a folder of instructions that an AI agent reads when a task matches the skill's description. This one covers talking with a Discord-backed OpenClaw agent or session. The agent can list the available targets, resolve a named target alias, send a private question and read the reply, or post a message to Discord through a helper script.

The skill does not search Discord history. Archive, history and search queries are directed to a separate skill called discrawl.

  • List and resolve named targets
  • Send a private ask and get a reply
  • Publish, where the session decides whether to post
  • Force-send a message that is posted immediately

Install the discord-clawd skill

Download the ZIP of the skill from this page and unzip it. You can install it for yourself or for one project. For a personal install, place the unzipped folder in ~/.claude/skills/. For a project install, place it in the project's .claude/skills/ folder.

In the Claude apps you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project: .claude/skills/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Prepare the local requirements

The skill needs Python 3 and a local clone of the steipete/agent-scripts repository at ~/Projects/agent-scripts. The helper script skills/openclaw-relay/scripts/openclaw_relay.py is referenced by the skill but is not included in the files reviewed, so check that it exists in your clone before you rely on the skill.

You also need a configured OpenClaw gateway and a Discord-linked agent session that has target aliases. Gateway tokens are required by that setup, but the skill tells the agent never to expose them.

  • Python 3
  • Local clone at ~/Projects/agent-scripts
  • skills/openclaw-relay/scripts/openclaw_relay.py present in the clone
  • A configured OpenClaw gateway with Discord-linked target aliases
cd ~/Projects/agent-scripts python3 skills/openclaw-relay/scripts/openclaw_relay.py targets

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. Ask in plain language that names the Discord-backed agent, session or target. The skill is meant for tasks such as talking with the agent, asking it a question, or posting through that route.

Name the target alias when you have one, such as maintainers. The skill says to resolve the target first, so the agent checks that the alias exists before it sends real content.

  • Ask the maintainers target whether the release notes are ready.
  • Check which relay targets are available.
  • Send the team a short announcement, but show me the draft first.
  • Post the build status to the maintainers channel.

How the relay commands work

The skill's preferred route is a private ask. If the target alias exists, the agent sends a private question first. The example below uses a test message that asks for exactly OK, which is a simple way to confirm delivery.

Use publish when the session should decide whether to post. Use force-send only when you explicitly want a message posted. The agent should report the target and the delivery mode it used.

  • targets: list available targets
  • resolve --target NAME: confirm an alias
  • ask --target NAME --message TEXT: private question
  • publish: session decides whether to post
  • force-send: post only on explicit request
python3 skills/openclaw-relay/scripts/openclaw_relay.py ask \ --target maintainers \ --message "Reply with exactly OK."

Safety notes: scripts and network

This skill runs scripts and uses the network. The helper script sends traffic to your OpenClaw gateway, which then reaches Discord. Review what the agent is about to send before it runs.

Force-send publishes content immediately. A message posted this way could expose information or misstate facts, so use it only with clear review. Never paste gateway tokens or session secrets into a request.

  • Force-send posts immediately; review drafts first.
  • Do not expose gateway tokens or session secrets.
  • The skill does not cover local Discord archive queries; use discrawl for those.

What people use it for

  • Asking a Discord-connected OpenClaw agent a question about a project and reading the private reply.
  • Checking which relay targets are configured before routing a message.
  • Passing a reviewed announcement to a team channel through an existing relay.
  • Letting the session decide whether a status update should be posted with publish.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the discord-clawd skill?

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.

What does discord-clawd require?

It requires Python 3, a local clone of steipete/agent-scripts at ~/Projects/agent-scripts, the openclaw_relay.py helper script, and a configured OpenClaw gateway with a Discord-linked agent session and target aliases. The helper script is referenced but not included in the files reviewed, so verify it exists.

Can discord-clawd search my Discord message history?

No. The skill is for talking with the Discord-backed agent or session and posting through that route. For Discord archive, history or search queries, the skill directs the agent to the separate discrawl skill.

Is discord-clawd free to use?

The skill is published under the MIT licence. Your OpenClaw gateway and Discord setup are separate and are needed for the skill to work.

What is the difference between ask, publish and force-send?

ask sends a private question to a target and returns a reply. publish lets the session decide whether to post. force-send posts the message immediately and should be used only when you explicitly want it posted.

Why won't the relay script run?

The skill needs Python 3, the agent-scripts clone at ~/Projects/agent-scripts, and the openclaw_relay.py helper present at skills/openclaw-relay/scripts/. It also needs a working OpenClaw gateway with target aliases. Check each of these in turn.

Our verdict

Use discord-clawd if you already run an OpenClaw agent connected to Discord and want your AI assistant to ask it questions or post to a team channel. Pick a different skill if you need to search or summarise past Discord messages, which belongs to discrawl, or if you have no existing OpenClaw relay.
