How to use the Case Status Summaries agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The status skill is an agent skill for law clinic students. Given your case notes, it writes one status summary for one reader: a plain-language update for the client, an internal briefing for the supervising professor, or a formal status report in court caption format. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and what review it requires before anything is sent or filed.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the status skill ZIP from this page.
- 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
- 3Set up the configuration file. Make sure ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md exists with your supervision style, plain-language standards and jurisdiction.
- 4Provide case notes. Supply the case notes the skill will use as its only factual source.
- 5Run the audience you need. Use /legal-clinic:status client, internal or court, or ask for the matching summary in natural language.
- 6Review before sending or filing. Check the draft, remove internal labels, and get supervision sign-off before any client message or court filing.
What is an agent skill, and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that gives an AI agent a set of instructions for a specific task. This one is named status and is invoked as /status with an argument of client, internal, or court.
The skill takes the case notes you supply and reframes the same facts for the chosen reader. It does not add facts of its own; the case notes are the factual source. Client drafts use plain language, internal drafts cover procedural posture and the student's assessment, and court drafts follow a formal caption format per local rules.
- client: what happened, what's next, what you need to do, how to reach the clinic
- internal: procedural posture, work done since last check-in, upcoming dates, items needing professor input, the student's assessment
- court: a formal status report with procedural history, current status, outstanding matters and proposed next steps
Install the status skill
Download the ZIP for this skill from this page. Unzip it into one of two locations: ~/.claude/skills/ to make it available across your work, or a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project.
Alternatively, upload the skill in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: unzip into .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
- App install: Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps
Set up the required configuration file
The skill loads a clinic configuration file before it writes anything. It reads supervision style, plain-language standards and jurisdiction from this path:
The skill is designed to rely on this file for the supervision workflow. Without it, the skill has no clinic-specific supervision style, plain-language standard or jurisdiction to work from.
~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.mdTrigger the skill with a request
You can run the skill with the slash command for the audience you need. The source documents these three forms:
You can also make a natural request, such as asking the agent to update a client, brief the professor, or prepare a court status report. The skill's description says it is used when a student needs to update the client, brief the professor, or prepare a court status report.
Before drafting, the skill reads your case notes for the facts. Then it generates the document for the audience you named.
- Natural request examples: "Update my client on the hearing schedule in plain language." / "Brief Professor Lee on where the discovery dispute stands." / "Draft the court status report ordered for next Tuesday."
/legal-clinic:status client
/legal-clinic:status internal
/legal-clinic:status courtReview every draft before it goes anywhere
Each audience has a review step. Client-facing drafts carry the label [AI-ASSISTED DRAFT — requires student review and supervision step per plugin config], which you strip before sending. The skill treats a client status update as a consequential action, and the gate is the supervision workflow in the clinic configuration file.
Court-ready drafts are marked AI-assisted and must be reviewed by a professor before filing. The court template includes a [VERIFY] note on caption format, local status report requirements and service requirements, which you must check against current local rules.
Internal drafts are going to the professor anyway, so the source treats them as not flagged. The student's assessment section is your own thinking and should be revised by you.
- Confirm the draft has been reviewed under the supervision protocol (queue, flag or lighter-touch) in your clinic configuration
- Remove all internal review labels such as [AI-ASSISTED DRAFT] and [VERIFY] from client-facing copy
- Check your jurisdiction's student practice rule for required sign-off language
What the skill will not do
The skill does not decide what to tell the client. Bad news and case weaknesses are conversations for the student and professor to plan first. The skill does not send anything and does not file anything with a court. It also cannot write the student's assessment in an internal status; it can scaffold that section but not write it.
- Does not send client messages
- Does not file with a court; it only drafts
- Does not decide strategy or how to deliver bad news
- Does not write the student's assessment section
Safety notes: scripts and network
This skill runs no scripts and uses no network access, according to its listing. Its inputs are your case notes and the clinic configuration file. Because the output is a draft for human review, treat anything it produces as unverified until a student and supervisor have checked the facts, dates and formatting.
Tips for better results
Give the skill complete, specific case notes, since they are the only factual source it uses. Keep dates and deadlines in the notes so the upcoming section and client next-steps can be filled accurately. Keep the clinic configuration file current, because the skill takes its supervision style and reading level from it.
The client template asks for plain English, for example "We filed your answer with the court on [date]" rather than formal procedural wording. The source sets a default reading level of 6th grade unless your configuration says otherwise.
- Keep case notes specific and dated
- Keep CLAUDE.md current with your supervision style and jurisdiction
- Run each audience separately rather than reusing one draft for all readers
What people use it for
- Sending a plain-language update to a client after a filing or a scheduled hearing
- Giving a supervising professor a concise internal briefing on posture, recent work and open questions
- Drafting a formal status report for a court-ordered status conference, to be reviewed by a professor before filing
- Preparing a student's own assessment section scaffold for an internal check-in
Frequently asked questions
Is the status skill free to use?
The source does not state pricing or licence terms beyond the listed licence, Apache-2.0. Check the licence file in the repository for the terms that apply to you.
What do I need to run the status skill?
You need the status skill installed, the clinic configuration file at ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md, and case notes to use as the factual source. The skill runs no scripts and uses no network.
Where do I install the status skill?
Unzip the downloaded ZIP into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Can the skill send client updates or file court documents for me?
No. The skill drafts documents only. It does not send anything, and court filings need professor review and filing under clinic procedure.
How is this different from writing status updates by hand?
The skill takes one set of case notes and produces the right version for the client, the professor or the court, with each format matching its reader. It still requires human review and does not decide strategy.
Why does the court report have [VERIFY] marks?
The caption format, local status report requirements and service requirements must be checked against current local rules. The skill leaves those marks so a student or professor confirms them before filing.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you are a law clinic student who needs to update clients regularly, or a supervising professor who wants consistent internal briefings, and you will review every draft. Pick something else if you want an agent to send client messages or file with a court automatically, since the skill is built to do neither.
