How to use the Bar Exam Practice Questions agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

This guide shows you how to install and use the bar-prep-questions skill, a set of instructions that lets an AI agent quiz you with bar exam style questions. You will learn what the skill does, how to install it, how to start a session with a natural request, and where its limits are. It is built for study only and is not a source of legal advice.

Bar Exam Practice Questionsanthropics/claude-for-legal · Apache-2.0

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the bar-prep-questions ZIP from this skill's page on the directory.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Place the skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or in .claude/skills/ inside a project.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  4. 4Make a request. Ask for bar prep in plain language, such as "test me for the bar on evidence".
  5. 5Answer the exam setup questions. Tell the agent which exam format and jurisdiction you are sitting for. It will not generate questions until it knows.
  6. 6Answer and review. Answer each question, then read the explanation of why each option is right or wrong and note the patterns the agent reports.

What the skill makes the agent do

Once installed, the agent quizzes you with MBE-style multiple-choice or essay-style bar exam questions. It weights questions toward the subjects you struggle with and scopes them to the exam your jurisdiction uses.

After each answer, the agent explains why the answer is right or wrong and tracks patterns in your misses. If you run a focused session, results can be written to a study plan file so the agent can come back to recurring weak spots.

  • Asks which exam and jurisdiction you are sitting for before generating any questions
  • Labels questions by rule body when rules differ, such as UBE/majority or a state-specific rule
  • Explains the difference between majority and state rules when they diverge
  • Refuses to treat real-life legal problems as study material and points you to a lawyer or legal aid

What you need before you install

The skill requires Claude Code or a compatible agent that reads SKILL.md files. It does not run scripts and does not use the network.

The skill can optionally read local config files at ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/law-student/, including CLAUDE.md (for jurisdiction, exam format, weak subjects and prep course) and study-plan.yaml (for scheduled subjects and session history). If these files do not exist, the agent will ask you the questions it needs.

Install the skill

Download the ZIP from the skill's page on this directory and unzip it. For a personal install, place the skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside your project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. The skill is meant to activate when you use phrases like the ones below. You can also add an optional argument such as a subject, --mbe, --essay or --session <n>.

The agent will first ask which bar exam you are sitting for and which jurisdiction. Answer these questions, because the agent will not generate questions until it knows the exam format.

  • "Bar prep: give me torts questions"
  • "Test me for the bar on evidence"
  • "Practice essay on contracts"
  • "MBE questions, weighted toward my weak subjects"
  • "Run a 10-question bar prep session"

Confirm your exam format and subject list

Before you study, check your jurisdiction's exam format and subject list against the NCBE's current outline. The skill points you to https://www.ncbex.org/ and to its NextGen, MBE and MEE pages. If your prep course and the NCBE outline disagree, the skill says to follow the NCBE outline and tell your prep course.

If you list a weak subject that your exam does not test as a standalone subject, the agent will flag it and offer options: skip it, drill related concepts that may appear inside integrated questions, or study it anyway.

  • Source for exam format by jurisdiction: https://www.ncbex.org/
  • NextGen subject outline: https://www.ncbex.org/exams/nextgen
  • MBE: https://www.ncbex.org/exams/mbe
  • MEE: https://www.ncbex.org/exams/mee

Handle rules that differ by jurisdiction

For subjects where majority rules and state rules diverge, such as Evidence, Civil Procedure and Criminal law, the agent asks whether a session is UBE/majority-rule, state-specific or mixed. It does not silently pick one. In mixed sessions, each question is labeled by rule body, for example [UBE/majority] or [CA-specific].

The skill's examples of divergence include California's Evidence Code and Code of Civil Procedure, and the community property states. Use the agent's explanation of the split as a starting point, then check the governing text for your jurisdiction.

Safety notes and limits

The skill is for study only. If you describe a real lease, ticket, family, money or legal matter, the agent will stop and direct you to legal aid, your school's clinic, a lawyer referral service or a private attorney.

The skill itself says to verify subject scope against the NCBE outline. Do not rely on it as the authoritative subject list.

  • It runs no scripts and uses no network access, according to its listing
  • It does not give legal advice on real situations

What people use it for

  • Drilling torts or contracts multiple-choice questions on weak subjects before a practice test
  • Writing practice essays and getting feedback on why an answer was right or wrong
  • Comparing UBE majority rules with a state's specific rule in Evidence or Civil Procedure
  • Running a short focused session and keeping a record of recurring mistakes across sessions

Frequently asked questions

Is the bar-prep-questions skill free?

The source material for this listing does not state a price or licence terms beyond its Apache-2.0 licence, which is shown on the listing. Check the licence file in the repository for the terms that apply to you.

What do I need to run the bar-prep-questions skill?

You need Claude Code or a compatible agent that reads SKILL.md files. The skill optionally reads local config files for your jurisdiction, exam format and session history, and it runs no scripts and uses no network.

How do I install a Claude skill from a ZIP?

Download the ZIP and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Does the skill tell me which subjects are on the bar exam?

It asks which exam and jurisdiction you are sitting for and scopes questions to that exam. It also points you to the NCBE site to verify the subject list, and it says the NCBE outline is the authority to follow.

Can I use it for real legal advice on my lease or a ticket?

No. The skill treats real situations as a trigger to stop and direct you to legal aid, a school clinic, a lawyer referral service or a private attorney. It only covers general legal concepts for study.

How is this different from a generic practice question bank?

The skill adapts to your jurisdiction and weak subjects, labels rule differences, explains each answer and tracks your recurring misses. A static question bank does not do those things by itself.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you are a law student who wants targeted, jurisdiction-aware bar practice that remembers your weak subjects and mistakes. Pick something else if you need legal advice on a real matter, or if you want a fixed, authoritative subject list, since the skill itself says to check the NCBE outline.
