How to use baoyu-skills: install and run AI agent skills

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

baoyu-skills is an open-source collection of reusable skills, which are task instructions for AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex. It is aimed at everyday content work, including Xiaohongshu image card series, infographics, WeChat Official Account covers and illustrations, and posting to WeChat. After this guide you will know how to install the skills you need and how to invoke them from your agent.

Quick start

  1. 1Check prerequisites. Confirm Node.js is installed and that you can run npx bun commands.
  2. 2Install the skills. Run npx skills add jimliu/baoyu-skills, or copy only the skill folders you need into your project.
  3. 3Add credentials. Place WeChat API credentials in ~/.baoyu-skills/.env or <project>/.baoyu-skills/.env, and keep project files out of Git.
  4. 4Invoke a content skill. Run a slash command such as /baoyu-xhs-images with your article path and optional --style or --layout flags.
  5. 5Update when needed. Use /plugin and the Marketplaces tab to update baoyu-skills to the latest version.

Check the prerequisites

baoyu-skills runs inside an AI agent, so you need one such as Claude Code or Codex. The README lists two prerequisites: a Node.js environment and the ability to run npx bun commands.

  • Node.js environment installed
  • Ability to run npx bun commands

Install only the skills you need

The repository contains 20+ skills. The README advises installing only the ones you actually use, because installing every skill adds unnecessary context overhead for your agent on every run.

The recommended quick install is shown below. For a single project in Codex, the README describes copying or symlinking each needed skill folder into <project>/.agents/skills instead of installing the full plugin.

npx skills add jimliu/baoyu-skills

Choose a minimal set for WeChat articles

For a WeChat Official Account article workflow, the README names this usual minimal set. You do not need baoyu-markdown-to-html separately, because baoyu-post-to-wechat already includes the Markdown to WeChat-ready HTML conversion flow. Install baoyu-format-markdown only if you need to turn raw text or drafts into structured Markdown first.

  • baoyu-cover-image
  • baoyu-article-illustrator
  • baoyu-post-to-wechat
<project>/.agents/skills/baoyu-cover-image/SKILL.md <project>/.agents/skills/baoyu-article-illustrator/SKILL.md <project>/.agents/skills/baoyu-post-to-wechat/SKILL.md

Add WeChat API credentials

Place your WeChat API credentials at the user level or the project level. Project-level .env files apply only to the current project. The README says not to commit them to Git.

  • User-level: ~/.baoyu-skills/.env
  • Project-level: <project>/.baoyu-skills/.env

Invoke a skill from your agent

Skills are run as slash commands in the agent. For Xiaohongshu, baoyu-xhs-images turns an article into 1-10 cartoon-style image cards using a Style × Layout system. You can let it choose a style and layout automatically, or set them yourself. Add --yes to skip confirmations, which the README suggests for scheduled tasks.

baoyu-infographic generates infographics with 21 layout types and 21 visual styles. It can recommend layout and style combinations from your content, or you can pass --layout, --style and --aspect yourself.

  • Styles for xhs-images: cute (default), fresh, warm, bold, minimal, retro, pop, notion, chalkboard, study-notes, screen-print, sketch-notes
  • Palettes (optional): macaron, warm, neon
  • Layouts for xhs-images: sparse, balanced, dense, list, comparison, flow
  • Infographic --aspect: landscape (16:9), portrait (9:16), square (1:1), or custom W:H
/baoyu-xhs-images posts/ai-future/article.md --style notion --layout list /baoyu-infographic path/to/content.md --layout funnel --style corporate-memphis

Update or register the plugin

To get the marketplace plugin, the README gives a command to run inside the agent. To update, run /plugin, open the Marketplaces tab, select baoyu-skills and choose Update marketplace. You can also enable auto-update.

  • Register: /plugin marketplace add JimLiu/baoyu-skills
  • Install the single plugin: /plugin install baoyu-skills@baoyu-skills
/plugin marketplace add JimLiu/baoyu-skills

What people use it for

  • Turning a WeChat article into a cover image with baoyu-cover-image and publishing it with baoyu-post-to-wechat
  • Creating a Xiaohongshu image card series from a written post with baoyu-xhs-images
  • Generating an infographic from a document with baoyu-infographic and a chosen layout and style
  • Running a scheduled Xiaohongshu job non-interactively with the --yes flag

Our verdict

baoyu-skills suits creators who publish to WeChat Official Accounts or make Xiaohongshu image series and already use Claude Code or Codex. It is a poor fit for people without an AI coding agent or anyone who needs a standalone graphical app or guaranteed stability, since the README gives no testing or support details.
