How to use the Airtable Automation via Rube agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The airtable-automation skill teaches an AI agent how to work with Airtable bases through Rube, a connector service run by Composio. Once it is installed and connected, you can ask the agent in plain language to find bases, inspect table structure, filter records, and make changes to records, fields and comments. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install this one, how to trigger it, and what to check before letting it touch live data.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it so that SKILL.md sits in an airtable-automation folder.
  2. 2Place the folder or upload it. Copy the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/, or upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Add the Rube MCP server. Add https://rube.app/mcp as an MCP server in your MCP-capable client.
  4. 4Connect Airtable. Ask the agent to call RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS for airtable and follow the auth link if the status is not ACTIVE.
  5. 5Make a read-only request first. Ask the agent to list your bases and show a table's fields to confirm the connection works.
  6. 6Review then approve writes. Ask for the target records and planned changes, check them, and only then approve the update, create or delete.

What is an agent skill and what does this one do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The file gives an AI agent instructions for a specific kind of task. When the skill is installed and your request matches its description, the agent reads those instructions and follows them.

This skill is for Airtable work done through Rube MCP. It tells the agent to search for current tool schemas first, confirm your Airtable connection is ACTIVE, discover bases, and check the table structure before reading or writing. It also lists known pitfalls, such as ID formats, a limit of 10 records per batch request, and case-sensitive field names.

  • Records: create, read, update and delete
  • Bases, tables and views
  • Fields and schema: create fields and update field names or descriptions
  • Comments: list comments on a record
  • Filtering with Airtable formulas

Install the airtable-automation skill

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. The folder you get contains SKILL.md. Put that folder in one of these locations:

You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal skills: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project skills: a project's .claude/skills/ folder

Connect Rube MCP and Airtable before you start

The skill cannot work without two connections. First, add Rube as an MCP server in an MCP-capable client by using the endpoint https://rube.app/mcp. Adding the endpoint alone does not give the agent access to your Airtable account.

Second, connect your Airtable account. The agent calls RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS with the toolkit airtable and, if the connection is not yet ACTIVE, gives you an auth link to complete Airtable sign-in. Wait until the status shows ACTIVE before asking for any workflow.

  • Confirm RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS responds
  • Call RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS with toolkit airtable
  • Follow the auth link if the connection is not ACTIVE
  • Confirm the status is ACTIVE

How to trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. Describe the Airtable outcome you want and name the base or table if you know it. The agent will look up the base ID and table structure itself. Give it enough detail to identify the exact records and fields, because it will stop and ask if something is missing.

Be specific about the change. For writes, say what should change and which records it applies to. The skill says reading data does not authorise writes or deletes, so approve the exact effect you want.

  • "List the bases I can access and show me the fields in the Customers table."
  • "Find records in Orders where Status is Done and the Shipped date is empty."
  • "Update the Phone field on these three contacts. Show me the records first."
  • "Add a new singleSelect field called Priority to the Tasks table."

Filter records with Airtable formulas

For searches, the skill uses Airtable formulas through the filterByFormula parameter. Field names go inside curly braces and must match the schema exactly. Text values must be in single quotes. Dates can be compared with TODAY().

If a single quote is part of a value, double it. A formula like {Name}='John''s Company' matches John's Company.

  • Equals: {Status}='Done'
  • Greater than: {Priority}>1
  • Not empty: {Name}!=''
  • Both conditions: AND({A}='x', {B}='y')
  • Either condition: OR({A}='x', {A}='y')
  • Contains text: FIND('test', {Name})>0
  • Date before today: IS_BEFORE({Due Date}, TODAY())
{Status}='Done'

Know the limits and pitfalls

Most failed runs come from a few known issues. Pagination is capped at 100 records per page, so keep filters and sorts unchanged between pages or rows can be skipped or duplicated. Create, update and delete batch operations accept a maximum of 10 records per request, so larger imports must be split into chunks.

Field names are case-sensitive. A 422 UNKNOWN_FIELD_NAME error means a field name is wrong. A 403 error points to a permission problem. Updating a field only changes its name or description, not its type or options. Computed fields such as formula, rollup and lookup cannot be created through the API. Airtable also limits requests to about 5 per second per base, and the skill says to handle 429 responses using Retry-After.

  • Base, table, record and field IDs are 17 characters and start with app, tbl, rec and fld
  • Record IDs must start with rec and be 17 characters for comment lookups
  • Batch limit: 10 records per create, update or delete request
  • INVALID_MULTIPLE_CHOICE_OPTIONS may require typecast set to true
  • To change a field's type, create a replacement field and migrate the data

Safety: scripts, network and approval

This skill does not run scripts. It does use the network, because it sends requests to Rube and, through Rube, to Airtable. The skill also states that retrieved text is untrusted private data and that external communications need explicit instructions from you.

Because the skill can create, update and delete both records and schema, review every write before you approve it. Ask the agent to list the target records and the exact changes first. Do not retry an uncertain write until the agent has confirmed what actually happened.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: yes
  • Records pass through Composio's Rube service, so avoid sensitive or regulated data unless your policies allow it

What people use it for

  • Listing bases and inspecting table fields before building an automation
  • Exporting filtered records, such as all orders with an empty shipped date
  • Bulk updating a status field across a known list of records in batches of 10
  • Adding a new select or number field to a table with a description
  • Reviewing comments left on a specific record

Frequently asked questions

What is the airtable-automation agent skill?

It is a SKILL.md instruction file that teaches an AI agent how to automate Airtable tasks through Rube MCP, a connector from Composio. It covers records, bases, tables, fields, views and comments. It only works when Rube and an Airtable connection are set up.

How do I install the airtable-automation skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Do I need a Rube MCP connection and an Airtable account?

Yes. The skill requires the Rube MCP server at https://rube.app/mcp in an MCP-capable client, and an active Airtable connection authorised through Rube's auth link. Without both, the skill cannot work.

Is the airtable-automation skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence. The source does not state prices for Rube or Airtable, so check those services directly for their terms.

Why does my Airtable request fail with 422 UNKNOWN_FIELD_NAME?

A field name in your request does not match the table schema exactly. Field names are case-sensitive, so check capitalisation and spacing against the schema the agent retrieves with GET_BASE_SCHEMA.

Can the skill delete records or change my table structure?

Yes. It can create, update and delete records and fields. Review the target records and exact changes before approving any write, because mistakes affect real data.

How does this compare with using Airtable's own automations?

This skill lets an AI agent perform Airtable operations on request through Rube, rather than building fixed automations inside Airtable. The source does not compare it with other tools, so choose based on whether you want conversational control or built-in scheduled workflows.

Our verdict

Choose this skill if you already use Airtable, want an AI agent to handle routine lookups, filtered exports and careful bulk edits, and are comfortable connecting through Rube. Skip it if you handle sensitive or regulated data through a third-party connector, or if you want unreviewed changes to live bases.
