How to use the AI Prompt Safety Review agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The AI Prompt Safety Review skill turns your agent into a prompt reviewer. You give it a prompt you plan to send to an AI model, and it checks that prompt for harmful content risk, bias, privacy and prompt-injection weaknesses, and clarity, then returns a scored report and a rewritten version. This guide is for developers and prompt writers who have not used agent skills before, and it walks through what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and where its limits are.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Get the ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review ZIP from our page.
- 2Unzip the skill. Extract the archive so the folder containing SKILL.md is in place.
- 3Copy it to a skills folder. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or in .claude/skills/ within a project.
- 4Or upload it in the Claude apps. Go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill there instead.
- 5Paste your prompt. Start a request that includes the full prompt text and asks for a safety or clarity review.
- 6Review the report. Check the ratings and critical issues, then compare the improved prompt with your original.
- 7Test before release. Run the suggested test cases on a real model and keep human review in place.
What is an agent skill, and what does this one make the agent do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file with instructions that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill's description. This one is named ai-prompt-engineering-safety-review and its only listed file is SKILL.md.
Once loaded, the agent acts as an AI prompt reviewer. It works through a fixed set of checks: safety (harmful content, violence and hate speech, misinformation, illegal activity), bias (gender, racial, cultural, socioeconomic and ability), security and privacy (data exposure, prompt injection, information leakage, access control), and effectiveness (clarity, context, constraints, format, specificity). It also looks at the prompt pattern used, technical robustness, and token efficiency.
What the report contains
The skill asks for a structured output. Each area gets a rating: harmful content risk and privacy risk as Low, Medium or High; bias and security as None, Minor or Major; and most effectiveness areas on a 1 to 5 score with a short explanation.
You also get a list of critical issues and strengths, an improved prompt with the safety, bias, security and technical changes explained, and testing recommendations covering test cases, edge cases and safety tests.
Install the skill from the ZIP download
Download the ZIP for this skill from our page. Unzip it so that the folder containing SKILL.md ends up in one of these locations: ~/.claude/skills/ for your personal use across projects, or .claude/skills/ inside a specific project if you want it only there.
Alternatively, if you use the Claude apps, you can upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills instead of copying files manually.
- Personal install: place the skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: place the skill folder in .claude/skills/ inside your project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
Trigger the skill with a natural request
You do not need a special command. Paste the prompt you want reviewed and say what you want, in plain language. The agent decides whether the skill applies based on the request. Including the words safety, bias, prompt injection, or review tends to match the skill's purpose, though the source does not list exact trigger phrases.
Include the full prompt text in your message. The skill analyzes the prompt text itself, so a short description of the prompt will give a weaker review.
- Review this system prompt for safety and prompt-injection risks: [paste prompt]
- Check this customer support instruction for bias and clarity before we release it: [paste prompt]
- Rewrite this prompt with safety measures added and explain each change: [paste prompt]
Read the output and decide what to change
Treat the scores as a starting point for your own judgement, not a verdict. Start with the critical issues list, then check the improved prompt against your original to confirm the rewrite still does what your product needs. Then run the suggested test cases against the prompt with a real model.
The skill's own description says the review is the model's judgement and can miss issues, so keep human and testing review in your release process.
- Fix high-severity issues in the critical list first
- Compare the improved prompt with your original before adopting it
- Run the listed test cases and edge cases against the model you use in production
Safety notes: scripts and network access
The skill is a text-based checklist and template. It does not run scripts and does not use the network, and it requires nothing else to be listed. It does not run code or contact outside services.
It reviews only the prompt text you supply. It is not a security audit of a full application, and it does not certify that a prompt is safe for production.
- Runs scripts: no
- Uses network: no
- Requires: nothing listed
What people use it for
- Reviewing a system prompt for an AI feature in your product before it ships
- Giving a team a repeatable checklist for prompt review before release
- Learning which common safety and clarity problems to look for in your own prompts
- Checking a prompt for prompt-injection weaknesses before exposing it to user input
Frequently asked questions
Is the AI Prompt Safety Review skill free to use?
The skill is published under the MIT licence, as listed on our page. The source does not mention pricing for any platform you use to run agents, so check that separately.
What do I need to run this skill?
The listing says it requires nothing else. It is a SKILL.md file that an agent loads, and it does not run scripts or use the network.
Where do I install an agent skill?
Place the skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in .claude/skills/ inside a project. In the Claude apps, you can upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Can this skill certify that my prompt is safe?
No. The skill's own listing says the review is the model's judgement and can miss issues, so it is not a certification. Keep human review and testing in your release process.
Does it audit my whole application for security?
No. The skill only looks at the prompt text you give it, not the full application. Use a dedicated security review for the rest of the system.
How is this different from a general prompt-writing tip list?
It is a structured checklist with fixed categories and a required report format, including ratings and a rewritten prompt. It is meant to be repeatable across prompts and reviewers.

Our verdict
This skill suits developers writing system prompts or AI feature instructions, teams that want a repeatable pre-release checklist, and prompt writers learning common safety and clarity problems. It is not a certification or a full application security audit, so pick a dedicated security review or red-team testing if you need either.
