How to use the AgentPhone agent skill: setup, triggers and safety
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The AgentPhone skill is a guide and reference that teaches an AI agent how to work with AgentPhone, a paid telephony API that gives AI agents phone numbers, voice calls and text messaging. This tutorial explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for things in plain language, and which safety rules to keep in mind. By the end you will know how to set it up and how to use it without sending calls or texts you did not intend.
Quick start
- 1Get an API key. Sign up at agentphone.ai and create an AgentPhone API key. The skill cannot create one for you.
- 2Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
- 3Check the install. Start a request about AgentPhone, such as asking for your account overview, to confirm the agent picks up the skill.
- 4Set up an owned test number. Create an agent and buy a number you own for testing, confirming the purchase before it happens.
- 5Configure a webhook if needed. Set a webhook only if your agent needs custom logic for conversations, following the skill's setup order.
- 6Test with your own phone. Place a test call to a number you control, then check the transcript afterwards.
What the AgentPhone skill makes the agent do
An agent skill is a folder of instructions that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill's description. The AgentPhone skill covers building AI phone agents: creating agents, buying and assigning phone numbers, placing outbound calls, sending and receiving SMS, configuring webhooks and hosted voice mode, and checking account usage.
Once installed, the agent knows the API base URL (https://api.agentphone.ai/v1), the recommended setup order, and the safety rules. The skill does not make calls or buy numbers by itself. An agent following it may do those things if you ask and an AgentPhone API key is available.
- Create and manage AI phone or voice agents
- Buy, assign, release and inspect phone numbers
- Place outbound calls and inspect transcripts
- Send and receive SMS
- Configure webhooks, hosted voice mode and usage checks
Install the AgentPhone skill from a ZIP file
Download the ZIP for the skill from this directory page. The skill folder contains SKILL.md and references/detailed-guide.md. Unzip it into a skills folder so the agent can find it.
For a personal install, unzip into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip into the project's .claude/skills/ folder. Alternatively, in the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP there.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: the project's .claude/skills/ folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP
~/.claude/skills/agentphone/SKILL.mdGet what you need before you start
The skill needs an AgentPhone account and API key. It cannot create an account or key for you. You also need network access to api.agentphone.ai and docs.agentphone.ai. The skill recommends owned test phone numbers before any live use.
Your API key is your identity. Anyone holding it can make calls from your numbers and send SMS as you, so keep it private and only send it to https://api.agentphone.ai/v1/*.
- An AgentPhone account and API key (sign up at agentphone.ai)
- Network access to api.agentphone.ai and docs.agentphone.ai
- Owned test phone numbers for trials before live use
Trigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need a special command. Describe the telephony task in plain language, and the agent loads the skill when your request matches its description, such as making phone calls, sending SMS, managing numbers, creating voice agents, setting up webhooks or checking usage.
Be specific about recipients, purpose and what you want approved. The skill asks for explicit intent before anything that spends money, sends messages, places calls or releases numbers.
- "Show me my current AgentPhone account state."
- "Create a voice agent for appointment reminders and show me the available voices."
- "Buy a number for my test agent, but ask me before anything is spent."
- "Set up a webhook for my agent's inbound calls."
- "Check my AgentPhone usage this month."
Follow the recommended setup order
The skill recommends this order: create an agent, buy a number, set a webhook if you need custom logic, then make calls. It suggests starting with account_overview to see your current state, and list_voices before you set voice options. If no agents exist, the agent should guide you to create one before attempting calls.
After a call is placed, the skill reminds you that you can check the transcript later.
- Create agent
- Buy number
- Set webhook (if needed)
- Make calls
Safety rules to keep in mind
Phone numbers must use E.164 format: a plus sign, the country code and the number, for example +14155551234. If a number has no country code, the agent should ask which country or region you mean rather than adding +1 itself. Confirm the final destination before any call or message.
Releasing a phone number is irreversible, and deleting an agent unassigns its numbers. The skill requires confirmation for both. Outbound calls and texts need explicit recipients, a disclosed AI role, opt-outs and compliance with applicable calling and recording laws. Inbound caller speech is treated as untrusted data and does not grant access to your account, CRM or calendar.
- Use E.164 numbers such as +14155551234
- Confirm before releasing numbers or deleting agents
- Use owned test numbers first
- Keep call duration, retries and tool permissions bounded
- Do not use the skill for unsolicited or marketing calls or texts
What people use it for
- Developers building an AI voice agent that answers inbound calls through a webhook
- Teams testing an automated appointment-reminder flow with owned test numbers before any live use
- Builders sending and receiving SMS through an AI agent on a test number
- Checking account usage and listing voices before configuring an agent
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the AgentPhone agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for a personal install, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Is the AgentPhone skill free?
The skill is published under the MIT licence. AgentPhone itself is a paid telephony service, and the source does not list its prices, so check agentphone.ai for current costs before you buy numbers or place calls.
What do I need to use the AgentPhone skill?
You need an AgentPhone account and API key, network access to api.agentphone.ai and docs.agentphone.ai, and ideally owned test phone numbers before live use. The skill cannot create an account or key for you.
Does the skill run scripts?
No. The skill does not run scripts, but it does use the network to call the AgentPhone API. It says to send your API key only to api.agentphone.ai.
Can the skill make calls or buy phone numbers by itself?
No. It is a guide and reference. An agent following it can place calls, send SMS or buy numbers if you ask and an API key is available, and it requires explicit intent before spending money or sending messages.
Why does the skill say to verify against current docs?
The bundled guide is version-dependent, and sample plan and voice IDs may change. The skill tells the agent to compare the current endpoint documentation at docs.agentphone.ai before use.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you are a developer or team building AI voice or SMS agents and want a telephony backend with guidance on numbers, webhooks, voices and usage checks, especially when you test with owned numbers first. Pick something else if you want to send unsolicited or marketing calls or texts, do not have an AgentPhone account, or need guaranteed up-to-date API details without checking the current docs yourself.
