How to use the ActiveCampaign Automation via Rube agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
This guide explains how to install and use the activecampaign-automation agent skill, a set of written instructions that teaches an AI agent how to work with an ActiveCampaign CRM account through the Rube MCP connector. It is written for people who may never have used an agent skill before. By the end you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for things in plain language, and which safety checks matter before anything is changed.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it to get SKILL.md. Place it in ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 2Add the Rube MCP server. Add https://rube.app/mcp as an MCP server in your client configuration, with working authentication.
- 3Connect ActiveCampaign. Ask the agent to call RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS with toolkit active_campaign, and complete the auth link if the status is not ACTIVE.
- 4Gather your IDs. Find your list IDs, automation IDs and task type IDs in the ActiveCampaign UI.
- 5Make a natural request. Describe the change in plain words, naming the contact and the exact tag, list or automation.
- 6Review before approval. Check the identified contact and the exact change, especially anything that could send messages to customers.
- 7Verify the result. Ask the agent to read the record back and confirm the change took effect.
What the activecampaign-automation skill does
Agent skills are folders of instructions that an AI agent loads when a task matches them. This one covers routine ActiveCampaign work done through Rube MCP, a tool service hosted by Composio. Once installed, the agent knows a step-by-step method for finding and changing contact records in your ActiveCampaign account.
The skill covers five kinds of work: looking up or creating contacts, adding or removing tags, subscribing or unsubscribing contacts from lists, enrolling existing contacts in existing automations, and creating follow-up tasks on a contact.
- Find or create contacts by email, ID or phone
- Add or remove tags on a contact
- Subscribe or unsubscribe a contact from a list
- Enroll a contact in an existing automation
- Create a follow-up task linked to a contact
Install the skill from the ZIP download
Download the ZIP file from this page and unzip it. The skill is a single file named SKILL.md. For a personal setup, place the skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.
You can also upload the skill in the Claude apps. Open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the skill there.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Connect Rube MCP and ActiveCampaign before you start
The skill cannot work without a Rube MCP connection and an authorised ActiveCampaign account connected through Rube. Add https://rube.app/mcp as an MCP server in your client configuration. The skill notes that adding the endpoint alone does not prove access; authentication and permissions depend on your host and the current Rube integration.
Then ask the agent to check the ActiveCampaign connection through RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS with the toolkit active_campaign. If the status is not ACTIVE, follow the returned auth link to finish ActiveCampaign authentication. Do not run any workflow until the status shows ACTIVE.
- Confirm RUBE_SEARCH_TOOLS responds
- Call RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS with toolkit active_campaign
- Complete the auth link if the connection is not ACTIVE
- Confirm ACTIVE status before running workflows
RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS toolkit: active_campaignHow to trigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need special syntax. Describe the outcome in plain words and name the contact, tag, list or automation. The agent should look up the current tool schemas first, then identify the exact account and contacts before changing anything.
Have your ActiveCampaign list IDs, automation IDs and task type IDs ready. The skill says these are found in the ActiveCampaign UI. If you do not have them, ask the agent to tell you which ID it needs rather than guessing.
- "Find the contact with email jane@example.com and tell me their ID."
- "Add the tag webinar-attended to contact 123."
- "Remove the tag trial-expired from jane@example.com."
- "Subscribe jane@example.com to list 2."
- "Enroll jane@example.com in automation 5."
Safety: what to check before the agent acts
Tags and automation enrollments can trigger real outbound messages to customers, so mistakes reach people directly. The skill tells the agent to read existing state first, check whether a change triggers messages, and get explicit approval for sending or enrollment with those effects.
The skill also says contact creation does not imply subscription consent, and that unsubscribe and suppression status must be preserved. After each change, the agent should read the result back. If a request times out, the agent should reconcile the outcome before retrying anything that is not idempotent. The skill does not run scripts. It does use the network, because it calls Rube MCP and ActiveCampaign.
- Review the contact and the exact change before approving
- Treat tag and automation changes as possibly customer-facing
- Never bulk-enroll people without review
- Check the read-back result after every change
Tips for reliable results
Give full identifiers where you can. Contact IDs, list IDs and automation IDs are numeric strings, and the skill notes that all IDs should be passed as strings. Action names are case-sensitive: tags use 'Add' or 'Remove', while list subscriptions use 'subscribe' or 'unsubscribe'.
Automations and lists cannot be built through this skill. Create them in the ActiveCampaign UI first, then ask the agent to use them. Due dates for tasks must be ISO 8601 with a timezone offset, and the end date must be later than the due date.
- Use 'Add' or 'Remove' for tags, lowercase for subscriptions
- Pass IDs as strings
- Create automations and lists in the ActiveCampaign UI
- Give task due dates as ISO 8601 with a timezone, e.g. 2025-01-15T14:30:00-05:00
What people use it for
- Tag contacts after they attend a webinar or submit a form, with the change reviewed first.
- Look up a contact's ID by email so other steps can use it.
- Subscribe or unsubscribe a named contact from a specific list.
- Enroll a single existing contact in an existing automation after approval.
- Create a follow-up task on a contact with a due date and assignee ID.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the activecampaign-automation agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it to get SKILL.md. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What do I need before the skill works?
You need a Rube MCP server connection at https://rube.app/mcp with working authentication, and an active ActiveCampaign account connected through Rube via RUBE_MANAGE_CONNECTIONS with the toolkit active_campaign. You also need list IDs, automation IDs and task type IDs from the ActiveCampaign UI.
Is the activecampaign-automation skill free?
The skill is listed under the MIT licence. The source does not describe pricing for Rube MCP or ActiveCampaign, so check those services directly for any costs.
Can the skill create automations or lists?
No. The skill states that automations and lists can only be built in the ActiveCampaign UI. It can enroll existing contacts in existing automations and subscribe contacts to existing lists.
Why does the agent ask me to confirm before tagging or enrolling?
Tags and automation enrollments can trigger real outbound messages to customers. The skill tells the agent to check for these effects and get explicit approval first, and to keep unsubscribe and suppression status intact.
Are there alternatives to this skill?
The source does not compare this skill with other tools. You can use the ActiveCampaign UI directly, or other agent skills or integrations if you prefer, and judge them against your own needs.

Our verdict
This skill suits marketing or sales ops staff who already use ActiveCampaign and want an agent to handle routine contact updates, and developers who want one consistent pattern for ActiveCampaign tool calls. It is a poor fit if you do not have an ActiveCampaign account and an authorised Rube connection, or if you need bulk emailing or large-scale automation enrollment without review.
