Free YouTube tools: summarize videos, get transcripts, download thumbnails
You don't need to sit through a 40-minute video to know what's in it, or screenshot a thumbnail to save it. These four free tools work from a YouTube link (Instagram, TikTok and Vimeo too, with some limits). Paste the link, pick what you need, copy the result. No account, no extension.
| You want to… | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Know what a video says without watching it | YouTube Video Summarizer | Summary, key points, chapters with timestamps, transcript |
| Save a video's thumbnail | YouTube Thumbnail Downloader | JPG in 1280×720, 640×480, 480×360 and 320×180 |
| Recreate a video's look with AI | Video to AI Prompt | A Veo/Sora/Kling prompt, shot list, lighting and colour notes |
| Post about a video | Caption & Hook Generator | 5 hooks, 5 titles, captions for 5 platforms, 15 hashtags |
How to summarize a YouTube video
- Copy the video's link from the address bar or the Share button (Shorts and youtu.be links work too).
- Open the YouTube Video Summarizer and paste the link.
- Press Generate. The AI watches the video, which takes up to a minute for long ones.
- Copy the summary and chapters, or download the transcript as a text file.
The transcript is written by AI from the audio, so check names, numbers and quotes before you publish them. Very long videos are transcribed for the first 30 minutes.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail
Every public YouTube video has the same set of thumbnail sizes. Paste the link into the Thumbnail Downloader, preview all four, and click Download on the one you want. Full HD (1280×720) only exists when the video was uploaded in HD; if it's missing, use Standard. Thumbnails belong to the creator, so use them for reference, mood boards or with permission.
How to turn a video into an AI video prompt
Seen a video whose style you love? The Video to AI Prompt tool watches the first few minutes and writes a prompt describing the look: shot types, camera moves, lighting, colour grade, pace and sound. It describes people generically and leaves out brands, so you make something new in the same style rather than a copy.
What about Instagram and TikTok?
Instagram doesn't let other sites read its posts, and TikTok often shares only part of a post's details. For those, paste the caption (or a line about what happens) along with the link and the tools work from that. YouTube is the only platform where the AI actually watches the video.
Doing this inside Claude or another AI agent
If you work in Claude Code, two open-source skills give the agent the same abilities on your own computer: one fetches YouTube transcripts, the other extracts frames and the transcript so the agent can answer questions about any video.
We don't offer video downloads. Downloading other people's videos breaks YouTube's and Instagram's terms and often copyright. Everything above works from the public link without saving the video.
